I tried replacing the clutch and pressure plate on my 99 Forester s/tb (Japanese spec SF5 model) with a clutch and pressure plate bought in the USA. The part numbers were the same but the clutch is not functioning. It seems as though the releasing bearing is not reaching the pressure plate fingers. When I swapped the old pressure plate and used it with the new clutch, the clutch action is very stiff. Can anyone help? Is there a difference in the clutch operation mechanisms between the US and Japanese models?
So you put a new clutch disc in, but used the old pressure plate? I first ask WHY...
Then I'm going to have to say that that is your problem... swapping parts like that is only beneficial if you are making measurements to show it'll work... Cluch disk thickness could be your problem, distance from pressure plate to flywheel is likely the main issue...
Unless I'm misunderstanding, I don't think this worked...
Thanks Aaron'z. I first replaced both the clutch disc and pressure plate. They were both new but I was not getting any clutch action. After that happened I tried the new disc with the old pressure plate for comparison. If disc thickness is the problem, is there any way to shave/machine the disc to reduce the thickness?
Sorry Aaron'z I think I am confusing you. I have only tried one clutch disc. After it didn't work with the new pressure plate I tried it with the old one. I think your idea about the thickness of the disc might solve the problem. Is there any way that I can reduce the thickness of the disc?
Just a few questions. Is the Subaru clutch fork any different in design than the clutch forks of other makes of vehicles? Is it possible to bend a clutch fork? Is it possible to install the clutch fork incorrectly (backwards)?

Not possible to install backwards I don't believe. The fork can break or bend. I have had 3 break in my 94 legacy. Haven't had any issues with my 02 foz in that regard. Aren't the turbo models pull type clutches instead of push? Possible that you got a push style clutch set instead?
Thanks Treytai. The clutch is a pull type and the replacement clutch is correct. My mechanic thinks there might have been some modifications to the new clutch which is causing it not to work. The fork seems to be ok
