I may well live for the lifetime of the clutch...if you have confidence and can cope with the noise, then leave it...if you become overly concerned about its longevity then change it!
Thing is, you will cop for a whole clutch replacement, not sure of the mileage of your motor but it could be a very premature swap out.
It's done 52k so if clutch needs done then happy to accept that and bite the bullet, it's just that I had an Astra SRI in my much younger days and the bearng did this for as long as I had the car with no probs...
Your warranty may not cover it, but from memory you've had the car only a very short time.
Consumer protection law is on your side as any fault that develops in the first six months is assumed to have been present when sold unless the seller can demonstrate that is not the case.
If it was me I would be looking to get it sorted by them, irrespective of what the warranty provides for.
Have a quick Google rummage for cars and Sale of Goods Act etc.
mmmmm ...not sure about second hand cars in that respect ....somebody could go and do 20,000 miles in 6 months.....I looked into this once as I had a clutch go on a mini after 4000 miles in the first 4 months and I simply had no case at all against the trader.
That's right they could, at which point the balance of probabilities shifts to say it was more likely the fault would have developed since sale, meaning the dealer is unlikely to be liable.
I had to return a used car before I bought the Foz, so know the law reasonably well on this point.
Have to be honest really as the problem was not there (or certainly not audible) at point of sale. Selling dealer has bent over backwards to resolve the other 'hesitation issue' so I won't push this one. Had it been a brand new car that's a different story.
I can live with the bearing noise but don't want it damaging anything else or being indicative of a pending clutch failure ...
That is fair enough, although it doesn't have to have been noticeable at the point of sale for the law to protect you.
Also, whilst they responded well, don't forget the fault was with what they sold you. I'm not encouraging you to be an arse, but people in the UK are pretty poor at enforcing their rights.
I totally agree with you and i will certainly mention it to the dealer before I made any moves to get it fixed myself..
The dealer has been ultra helpful re the hesitation issue, they have sent all the data out to Subaru Japan to have a custom map written and if this doesn't come back quickly enough (they have already chased this up last week) then they will be happy to pay for me to get Andyf to map it for me (as they know him and he is local to me) and will get agreement from Subaru uk that this will not void my warranty.
All though this is yet to all materialise, they have kept me updated and I've been pretty impressed over the last few weeks with their honesty and efforts to ensure I'm happy with the car. Something that the Subaru dealer who I have dealt with for over 12 years and are only 1 mile away from me, could learn alot from in the way of 'after sales care'
I would like to see the law now on this as a matter of interest as my experience was 5 years ago and maybe it's changed since ? The office of fair trading assured me I had no case at all back then but maybe I should have pushed it a bit more ? Maybe because it was a clutch and very hard to say it was 'at fault ' at point of sale. I must admit it didn't really worry me too much because a clutch can start to go at any point and very hard for a dealer to see 4000 miles into the future on a second hand car to be fair. Funny thing is my ex wife wore a brand new clutch out in under 2000 miles because she was such a bad driver he he !!
Your having a nightmare with your car SiPie? Was it a demonstrator before you had?
Mine was and the clutch pressure plate fingers started to break up at 60k miles. Within a week there was a "ping" sound as something broke and suddenly no clutch.
Subaru (Carstins) collected the car and gave me a hire car. They investigated it and found it was the pressure plate dying. They changed every clutch component including flywheel etc all under warranty.
I know you don't need this as you have just got it back but it sounds to me like it needs proper investigation. If under warranty get it checked/changed before it goes.
Might be worth ruling any other possibilities but I'm not sure what they would be.
Yup, demonstrator, then one owner for next 3 years. I'll be honest and admit it hasn't been the best buy but the 'niggles' are getting ironed out and certain the car is in pretty good shape otherwise...guess I just have a few 'perfectionist issues' when it comes to wanting cars to be 100% as they should be.
Hope you get some relief from your nerve pain soon, sounds hellish . I get sciatic pain and thank god it's not with me 24/7 as it is with some and nerve pain really is brutal :icon_frown:
Does your trans make noise at idle with the clutch in, or only when you release the clutch? Such as leaving a light. It could very easyly be your pilot bearing you are hearing, rather than the new TOB.
Mine only makes noise with the clutch released, its the TOB for sure, i can press on either side of my clutch fork with my fingers and make it stop/diminish
