So, I found out I gotta replace my transmission. 4th and 5th gears are dropping intermittently during deceleration. I looked into rebuild, but for a shop to just crack open the transmission is $450 minimum.
I found through the transmission chart, this is the one I have (or at least should have).
US Forester MY00-01 TY755VC1BA 3.545 2.111 1.448 1.088 0.780 ‐ 3.333 1.000 4.111 Viscous (4kgf) Open
I found a guy who has one out of a 98 which has the exact same gear ratios, but my buddy who owned this forester before me said it would be a Phase 1 and the bell housing would not bolt up (as mine is a Phase 2).
Is this true and if so, what years would match up with my motor? Thanks!
The phase 1 transmissions bolt up to phase 2 engines just fine. The main difference between the transmissions is the switch to more bolts and fewer dowels.
Any Forester manual transmission from MY97-02 will bolt into your car.
A few months ago we swapped a Phase 1 DOHC 5MT from a MY98 Forester into a Phase 2 SOHC equipped MY03 Baja. Everything matched up perfectly, including axles.
Things don't work as nicely the other way around though, but they do still swap over.
double-check each transmission code, but as long as they match up with the correct Forester gearbox for each year they should all be a 4.111 final drive.
Here are the 5MT USDM non-turbo Forester gearbox codes:
MY98: TY753VJ1AA
MY99: TY755VC1AA
MY00-01: TY755VC1BA
MY02: TY755VC2AA
MY03: TY755VC3AA
MY04: TY755VC4AA
MY05: TY755VC5AA
MY06-08: TY755VC7AA
the 1st and 2nd gear ratios changes slightly in the MY03+ gearboxes, but they still remained 4.111 final drive ratios.
4.111 final drive means the diff ratio built into the MT case ... so you should be fine with the rear diff.
did you read through the manual trans sticky? there are some internal differences of interest, so be sure you write down the trans code if you have to buy internal parts in the future. here's what i remembered, from that sticky:
The internal design of the transmission, for the Impreza line, was the same from 1992 (it's introduction in Japan) until mid-year 1999. After the 1999 model year, the synchro engagement hub changed design, and it's been that way ever since. I know for a fact that all 5MT 1999 and newer transmission innards all use the same engagement hub.
The good thing, is that the transmission case itself, despite outside changes, has NOT changed since 1993. I.E. Newer transmission guts (an entire gearset designed for a WRX, for example) will drop into the case from a 93 L model AWD Legacy.
Here's another little kicker. The spline's on the output gear shafts are different for pre-99 and post-99. I've tried, a WRX center diff didn't work with my 94 Legacy Turbo 1:1 transfer gears.
Well, I found a Phase 2 transmission with significantly less km that I'm probably gonna get. More money but less chance of anything going wrong. And I also get a 90 day warranty as well.
In the meantime, I'm gonna throw some Smurfblood in it to see if I can make it last another 2 months or so.
Given that 4th and 5th gear is dropping (probably due to synchro issue) and sometimes 5th grinds slightly when going in, what would be the preferred mix of smurfblood and Motul?
i tried the smurfblood, 2 qts + 1.5 qts redline 75-90NS. it felt great at first but the effect wore off and I noticed sludge on the dipstick. should be OK for a short time since you're planning to swap it anyway.
maybe someone will chime in that has use the smurfblood for a long time and still likes it? i'm not planning to ever use it again.
i decided to go the premium dino gear oil route. I'm using Lubrication Engineers 703 80w90. others use Swepco 201 and really like it.
i thought cheap 75-90 dino from autozone shifted better than synthetics I tried.
I would try subaru extra-s... It's worked better than any other fluid i've personally used.. cocktails and the like...
