I have an auto tranny and i cant down to 1st gear. I have first gear, but I just cant shift into it manually. Anyone have any ideas why? Linkage? 2000 Forester L 4 eat 215k.
Are you having an issue trying to get the gear selector into the first position? That is the clarification we are needing first before making assumptions there is actually something physically wrong with the transmission.
ok so the gear shifter stops at 2nd gear. Correct?
definately sounds like a linkage issue. I had a turbo 400 in my firebird and it too would not physically go into 1st gear, that ended up being an internal bind in the transmission itself.
Check the linkages. Make sure there is no debris or mud or any other obvious issues with the way the linkage works. I suggest getting a look at it while someone else shifts the car. (to do that safely, I would suggest putting the car up on jackstands and getting all tires off the ground.)
Also, remove the trim around the gear selector, and make sure there isn't a blockage there either. Once you check to make sure it's not physically getting blocked, see if you can move the shifter at the transmission itself. If it still feels like it's stopping, it could be an internal issue with the selector mechanism. Especially if 1st gear is working normally while in drive.
so i put the car up on stands and went to mess around with the linkage and decided i wanted to see if it was the shifter. so i unhooked the linkage and it was the shifter so i reassembled the linkage and tore apart the shifter column. there was a tiny piece of plastic that was blocking the shifter. thats all. im happy it wasnt an internal problem. thanks all for your advice.
while under there i found out i have a leak for my rack and pinion.
