Default 2004 Forester XT,harsh downshift when cold: Read me!!

I have received quite a few pm's regarding this issue, especially since the temps have dropped, so I figured a thread on the subject would be appropriate.

SOA currently has a flash file available for the TCM. Most dealers should at least check if the tcm is eligible for a reflash (pays almost an hour for 15 minutes of work, they better check it!)

Anyway, if you are having trouble getting your local dealer to perform the reflash, just give them the following information.

Pack # UD-S206
2004 Forester 4EAT 2.5 litre turbo
Emission spec: FED CAL

Downshift shock when cold 4-3 & 3-2
Decryption keyword: 2D276859
SUM value: F150
New CID: 87FE7WB0

Hopefully that will help a few people out.

So this is only an '04 XT AT, correct? Does this problem occur even after the car is sufficiently warmed up?

Does this carry over into 2005, or only 2004?

I went ahead and stickied this since it's such a common problem. Thanks a lot for the info!

Is it an AT problem only? Not sure if I have really noticed at all this winter. My problem (started this winter) is when I start cold the first time I brake is incredibly jerky feeling. After the first, maybe second brake, it is absolutely fine. Come afternoon starting the car warmer the problem generally isn't there.

Ben, this is great info.. is this similar to the click when "up"shifting from 2-3.. sound of the gears coming together? I will keep my ears out for this one too.

Thanks for the info. I have complained about the shifting since I bought it last summer. I heard that there was a reflash, but my local dealer told me that it doesn't exist. Thanks for the proof!!

I also have noticed that when the weather gets colder, the FXT has a taping noise from the engine bay. The dealer told me that it is just the injectors firing and is normal. Anybody else have this problem

I've noticed that the 06 that I just bought shifts very hard from first to second before the car warms up. I just assumed the tranny fluid is just a little thick and causes harder shifts. it actually gives the feeling of an auto with a shift kit.

i had to borrow my parents' 05MY XT (4EAT) the other day. i never felt it downshift so instantly and hold or so long before. i kept thinking maybe because it was colder than it has usually been. i'm used to it lagging.

I am driving my first Forester (00) and I am very happy with it.

However, at highway speeds, it can downshift harshly.
For example, I will have my cruise control on at 70 mph and going up a hill. Then, if the car needs to downshift, it will do so in a way that makes me feel I need to have the transmission checked out.

My local transmission specialist (Aamco) tell me that it will cost around $1200 just to drop it, open it and see what the status is.

Is there anyone here with a similar issue (with a completely warmed up engine)?
Maybe I can save some money if I know if this is a common qurk or if this is something that needs to be checked out.

Default 2005 SUBARU FORESTER reflash??? tranny issues

Hi, I have a 2005 forester x / awd and am having transmission issues. various problems include... driving along and coming to a slowdown to make a tuen and then go to accelerate from the slowdown and you get a serious jolt before shifting into the gear almost as if it has a bad torque converter but ive seen peopel having the same jolting reaction in the same circumstances of a slow down to an acceleration... Its an 05 so is ther a reflash? the tranny was flushed and filter changed 8K miles ago and the car had 49k on it, Is ther a reflash for the 2005 and if so PLEASE help me out, its my mothers first new car ever and its sad to see her nervous driving the car as the jolt scares her (ive driven it and I can see why!) Please help, thanks!

when driving around town try leaving the shifter in 3 and see if that helps

4th gear isn't needed until crusing above ~40 MPH
