Ok. I have looked around I have read that I need something called 90w gear oil for my transmission. I understand that my front diff and transmission share fluid.
Here is my question:
What fluid can I use that is actually available?
90w gl-5 fluid is something I couldn't find.
Please help me out. Thanks a lot!
You can find GL-5 75W-90 fluid most decent auto places, but I've not had good luck with many of them. Extra-S is definitely the way to go for Subaru manual transmissions.
Lucas is fine as a hypoid gear oil, but it's terrible on the synchros. I had nothing but crunchy shifts to 3rd with Lucas, and it was still bad when I drained a quart and added synchromesh.

Yeah, the Lucas gear oil probably isn't the best choice for the Forester transaxle (MT + front diff). This product spec sheet suggests the gear oil contains LS additives.
I'd recommend removing the Lucas gear oil and replacing it with a non-LS alternative.
I've ended up using Mobil Delvac 75W-90 synthetic gear oil (the non-LS type) in both of my Foresters' MT's. It can be hard to find, but it works very nicely.
