Default 2001 5MT swap?

I have a 2001 forester non-turbo with a 5MT TY755VC1BA that needs attention. I can get my hands on a TY754VU1AA JDM. Any info on their compatibility would be appreciated very much.

I strongly discourage putting in JDM anything. Your not in japan, dont run japan **** lol. Biggest reason is, Your going to break it, and where are you going to get parts for it? Your not. your going to save your self a lot of trouble, struggles, and money using usdm stuff, because you live here and its readily available.

I don't have any info on the TY754VU1AA, but I can tell you that a TZ1A3ZN3AA will fit fine on a 2001. I had one from a JDM FSTi (yes, the SF FSTi's came with a 4EAT), and we gave it to a friend with a MY01 Forester whose stock tranny was on its last legs. That was 4 years or so ago, and the JDM tranny is still going strong in her car!

TY755VC1BA
  • US Forester MY00-01
  • 2500cc AWD
  • p/n: 32000AF000
  • Push-Style Clutch
  • Transfer Case Ratio: 1.000
  • Final Drive Ratio: 4.111
  • Center Diff Type: Viscous (4kgf)
  • Front Diff Type: Open

TY754VU1AA
  • JDM Impreza MY98-01
  • 1600cc AWD
  • p/n: 32000AE740
  • Pull-Style Clutch (not confirmed)
  • Transfer Case Ratio: N/A
  • Final Drive Ratio: N/A
  • Center Diff Type: N/A
  • Front Diff Type: N/A

I'm not sure what they've told you that transmission is from, but everything points to it having come out of a 1.6L Impreza AWD.

*EDIT*
upon further research, it looks as though the above listed JDM transmission is likely a Pull-Style clutch versus the OEM Pull-Style clutch in your Forester. I can't officially confirm this though, and I believe that could prove to be problematic if you plan on retaining your existing clutch...

They don't have any info about it's origin, it is attached to a 1.6 engine. Not knowing any details about it's gearing, I'm a little skeert of it. Does anyone know the tag number to look for in a dual range tranny that would fit? Thanks for all the info!

I believe we might need an Australian member to chime in regarding the tag number of the dual-range transmissions they've got in their Foresters.

I think they are in more areas than just Australia. There is an ebay auction right now for a 01 forester in Birmingham UK, the picture clearly shows the range selector. Ebay item 330645065747

98-04 Impreza 2.5RS
98-05 Forester NA
97-04 Legacy 2.5GT

You're not limited on trannies. If you want a shorter 5th gear you can grab that tranny from like say a '04 Outback 5spd.

Is it recommended to swap a 4eat for the 5mt? I haven't changed out the trans yet. I have grown to like the auto in my wife's Forester due to the lack of a low range in the 5mt.
