I called the dealership this morning and they say they can't do anything until Subaru "officially" releases the warranty. Then we may get all new puddle lights.

The recall was "official" as of the NHTSA notification.

The current wait - as Philistine and several other members from various other online Subaru communities have noted - is on the dealerships receiving the appropriate replacement component (from Subaru) to actually complete the physical recall - to fit the new part to your vehicle, that is.

I understand what you're saying, but I really don't think that there should be any problems getting the problem addressed, as long as the component installed was a genuine Subaru product, which they'll easily be able to tell, given the construct of the aftermarket units.

This is a true safety recall related to a specific product/component, so Subaru is obligated to perform it regardless of who installed the product - it's the product's fault, nothing else.

For example, vehicles that fall outside of warranty date are still subject to the recall, which dealerships are obligated by law to honor, even if the vehicle is no longer in the hands of the original owner.

This is an odd one. I got the email to get the puddle lights done. Mine were installed at the dealers when I bought the car.

Dealer says they need to "register" my car with SOA before they can do the recall.

Did I miss that in anyone's earlier posts? Or am I just being lucky as usual? I can see from an earlier post that the dealer doesn't necessarily update SOA on the installed options, so I guess that must be it.

lfdal,
I got my letter also. Mine were installed by the dealer at time of purchase. Not installed at the port.
I have had my car in for warranty 3 times to replace 3 different puddle lights. Probably everyone that has puddle lights have had a bulb(s) replaced under warranty.

I don't know if this will help you or not. Just sharing some info.

Dave

Appreciate the info.

They said they called SOA today and the puddle lights will be officially listed as of tomorrow. They let me make the recall appointment for next week.

dsizer,
Are they putting in a new set up(fuse, lights, etc...)? Or just fuses, as I was under the impression?

Philistine,
Did they give you a new set(fuse, lights, etc...) or add a fuse?

I have a puddle light out and I won't bother buying a replacement if they are putting a new set up in.

Dave

Default Puddle Light Recall

My wife had the new Puddle Lights (recall) installed. She said it took the shop two mechanics and two hours to install the new lights. This seems like a lot of time & a major fix.

What she told me is that the new lights go on only when it's dark. I believe the older puddle lights were on in daytime too? I didn't check.

That said - the older puddle lights kept dying. One LED would always go out. So, two sets of lights had to be replaced before this iteration. When I get back from my business trip - I'll try and provide more info.

At the end of the day - puddle lights seem to be a low-purpose addition fraught with way too much upkeep from both owner and Subaru's perspective. Seriously, why bother?

YMMV depending on what dealer you go to. In my case, I installed the Subaru puddle light kit myself.....made an appointment with and went to my dealer last week. They did not query me as to whether the lights were dealer installed.

Interestingly...after inspecting them...they said mine already had the circuit breaker or whatever that was the reason for the recall. They said no modification was needed. Hope they are correct. I installed the kit in March of 2011.

That's interesting in a strange way. We had the second puddle light (non-recall) in 2012. The recall puddle lights took a bit of time to get in + it took them a whole lot of time to install??? That, or they're making money on labor off the recall???

Either or, wish I had gotten something else like - interior glow lights, or a fuzzy Subaru keychain. :)
