Default Trouble Code P440?

Hello all, I have a '01 Forester and last night I had a check engine light come on. So this morning I got out my trusty OBDII tool and pulled the codes. It came up with a P440 trouble code that reads as an "Evaporative Emissions Control System Malfunction" I checked for easy stuff like that the gas cap was tight and other things... But no help.

Any ideas?

Thanks all!
Tim

DTC P0440 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION

DTC DETECTING CONDITION:
  • Two consecutive driving cycles with fault
TROUBLE SYMPTOM:
  • Gasoline smell
  • There is a hole of more than 1.0 mm (0.04 in) dia. in evaporation system or fuel tank.
Diagnostic procedure:
  • Check fuel filler cap
  • Check drain valve
  • Check purge control solenoid
  • Check fuel tank for leak(s)

Most common problem is a bad fuel cap or crack fuel line. Good luck. It just could be the fuel cap not catching snug and may take a little time for ECU to detect and correct.

Also check the hoses on the black plastic evap canister. That's located by the right rear tire under where the gas filler is. That will have hoses on it in the back. Check that those hoses are in good shape and tight.

I'm getting the same code now, and I've already replaced the filler neck 40k ago. I remember finding a Subaru newsletter for their techs in PDF form, but I stupidly didn't save it, can't seem to find it again.

Check the wires coming from the charcoal canister as well, the wires tend to get corroded/torn and throw a code.
