Default Transfer Clutch problem that won't go away

Hi-

My 4EAT 2000 Forester has been exhibiting the clutch binding problems on turns that I have seen described here and elsewhere. Basically when making sharp turns it feels like you are driving over a rumble strip.

Well my local Subaru dealer replaced the transfer solenoid, the clutches and plates, and the extension case and the problem seemed worse. So I took it back and he replaced the reduction drive gear and shaft, as well as putting in a second new clutch pack and it got a little better but is still there. I am frustrated and annoyed- before I go back again does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong here?

Thats sounds like a bad center differantial. Did they check that?

what's your tire situation? any replaced individualy/in pairs without replacing all 4?

My impression was that the center differential consisted of the transfer clutches and associated parts- and my confusion lies in the fact that they have replaced almost all of those parts and there is no significant difference.

Tires have always matched and been regularly rotated and inflated, and they certainly have been since this problem arose.

You most likely have an issue with a speed sensor. Its probably thinking that the back is always slipping, and always sending power to the rear. All tires match, right?

Was the transfer solenoid valve body replaced, or just the solenoid?

Hmm, speed sensor- now there's an interesting idea- where are these speed sensors located?

It looks like what they replaced was

31942AA103 VALVE AY TRAN
31952AA060 PLATE TRANSFE
33284AA001 SEAL TRANSFER

All tires match.

AT versions have no center diff. Seems like all that stuff they did should have solved the problem. I agree that you should look into the valve body and perhaps speed sensors.

Is a steering angle sensor fitted on that model? If failed, then the MPT may be remaining engaged during turns when it ought to be partially disengaging.

Also, have you tested with the 2WD fuse in to temporarily eliminate the MPT from the equation and make sure it's not something else in the drivetrain causing the problem?

It drives like a champ in FWD mode.

I looked in the manual at the speed sensors- it looks like the whole wiring harness would need to be replaced, which would involve some disassembly of the tranny to make all of the connections- no small job at all. I am guessing that my dealer would have diagnostic equipment that could determine if it is some sort of valve body/speed sensor problem? I feel a little bit like he has been guessing so far...

On nonturbo models the front and rear speed sensors are somewhere in the transmission (just looked it up recently but can't remember where they are), the turbo models have the rear speed sensor on the side of transmission case. Where in NY are you? You might want to give IPT a call as they specialize in import automatic transmissions and seem to have the most experience with the subaru AT. I believe that a dealers SSM (select monitor) reader can read the input of all these sensors, they should be able to plug it in and see if they're reading correctly.

I'm assuming the dealer put all new fluid in when they changed the transfer clutch out? If not do a flush or a few drain/refills.

I just had this problem and what fixed it was: a drain/refill plus adding Lubegard additive. The Lubegard (black bottle one) keeps the clutch packs from binding up. You can pick it up at Napa. It will say "Highly Friction Modified ATF Supplement" on the bottle.

If you can't find Lubegard black, try 10 ounces of GM LSD additive.
