Squealing and very hard to turn steering wheel when it's cold out

Hey guys.

My foz is squealing a lot when I accelerate frequently and sometimes when I'm idling. It's usually when its around the freezing mark (32 degrees fahrenheit) but not always. I bought a big can of belt dressing at the auto store, and applied liberally to all the visible belts. It didn't help.

The other thing is, when moving slowly such as backing out of a parking spot or my driveway or something the steering wheel is EXTREMELY hard to turn, it's like the car is fighting me to turn it.

I'm going to be honest, Me and my family are going through a sort of rough patch so we can't afford to take it to the dealer to have them fix it.

Any ideas guys? :\

defiantly something to do with the power steering. maybe the pulley on the power steering pump is bad.

You are going to need to start it up when its cold out and watch the power steering belt. See if it slipping or something. Hopefully the belt is just loose. It may help to have someone turning the wheel back and forth while watching.

Did you check the drive belt to see if it's tight? If it's real loose, no amount of belt dressing will prevent it from slipping. With the engine NOT running, press against the belt (between the pulleys) with your finger. There should almost no deflection with a normal amount of force. If there is, you need to tighten the belt, which is easy to do.

There is a decent amount of movement when I push on it with my finger. How do I tighten the belt?

Theres a vertical bolt by the alternator that gets tightened, it moves the alternator up to increase tension on the belt.

Also the pulley for the power steering pump is pressed on, there have been a few cases of it coming loose and spinning on the shaft, so it looks like belt isn't slipping, but the pump isn't turning.

I'd also change out the power steering fluid (takes dexron3).

I'll change out the fluid tomorrow, did a search on how to do it and it seems very easy. Now to find this bolt that I need to tighten...

Look closely at the adjustment. There is another bolt you need to loosen first before you turn the long bolt. If not, you will break it.

Update

So today I've gone to 5 different auto stores and none of them had Dexron 3. At autozone the guys said 'oh the transmission fluid?' i said yeah but im putting it in my power steering and they looked at me like i was a dumb kid. The closest I got to dexron was at aid auto store they had castrol syntec Dextron VI which i was going to get but then at the bottom it said 'only for general motors vehicles'

What do I do??

Head to your closest dealership and buy the Subaru ATF/Dexron III. Just make sure it's not the ATF-HP stuff.

Cheap transmission fluid at any auto parts store is what you need. Tell them you need tranny fluid for your 1987 buick. What they hand you will be the right stuff.
