Default Rear Hum

Hi all
I am interested in buying a forester but before I do I need help. The one i have seen and test driven has a serious hum from the back. Could this be a wheel bearing or something to do with the all wheel drive system? Help please

Listen to hear if the humming changes in pitch when you shift the load from one side to the other when turning.

I'd say its the bearings.

Then again, some all season and off road tyres hum.

if it is some thing that you are concerned about agree to have a independent shop look at it.

We'll find out Thursday, I have an appointment then to inspect the damage...........I'm a bit miffed to see this happen at such low mileage. Never towed or off a dirt road. Something i've noticed.....The bottom of differential is very hot after 20 minutes of driving on cold fluid. Spoke to my son who has a 03 WRX and he has the same condition. Is this due to the proximty to exhaust or do these just run hot? This can't be good for the fluid, all .8 of a quart of it.

Upon inspection, Subie dealer said right side rear wheel bearing was bad, Replaced this one and noise was reduced 70% although have another appointment for this Thursday.....Left side is whining now! At least it's getting quieter.

Well the left side rear wheel bearing was bad too! that's (2) wheel bearings in less than 3 weeks. At least it was under waranty(50K) still. With new Michelin Primacys, all is good & quiet.
So much for the local wrench and his $800.00 Pinion bearing failing.

I just had both rear wheel bearings replaced at the same time after hearing them hum for over 10,000 miles....

Bought all brand new Subaru parts: Bearings, Seals, etc. and had them professionally installed

(because I didn't have time to do it myself honestly)

now, only a month later, one or both have FAILED !!!!!

DAMMMMMMITTTT!!!!!

It really pisses me off when brand new parts fail like this....

I am getting it warrantied and swapped out for the parts cost by my dealership where I bought the parts..

(SUBARU OF DALLAS- MIKE, KEITH, CAREY- THE BEST PARTS GUYS I HAVE EVER HAD BTW!!!!! - (214)526-5555 -TELL 'em RYNO Sent ya!!!)

My car has 125,000 miles on it....

GOOD LUCK!
RYNO

Is this a common problem for Forester's? I have a '98 that also has a humming noise from the rear. I replaced the tires, but that didn't fix the noise. The noise doesn't seem to be any louder on one side or the other, so maybe both wheel bearings are bad? BTW, the car has about 145,000 miles.

Not sure if it's a problem or not, perhaps the higher mileage owners can answer this. I was very surprise to have 2 go out at 50K and considering the light use this vehicle gets, something appears amiss. Is it a design, installation, or lack of intial lubrication problem??
