Hmm, kinda odd it only started happening after I got it back from the dealer. However its already starting to disappear... Again, they're not rattling, just creaking as they cool.

Default Heat Shield rattle

My Heat Shield has been loose and rattling since about 60K. Dealer offered to cut it off for $90, but since it's just a noise and not a hazard, I have just dealt with it.

Default 2002 head gasket ?

My Subaru dealer told me my head gaskets were leaking and it would cost 2000 dollars and then I took it to another mechanic and he said that the head gaskets were not leaking so I am confused and we only have one Subaru dealer in the area. In simple laymens terms how do you know if you have a head gasket issue? Thanks

Heres a few simple things you can do: Use a rag and clean off the engine, then you can see where exactly the leak starts from. Also, pull off the oil cap and run a finger around, or drain a bit of oil, milky white or bubbly? That would mean theres coolant in your oil. Do the same with your radiator coolant; does your finger produce any motor oil?

These are some good indicators of where the problem is originating.

Smile Issue resolved!

Took my '03 Forester to another dealer today. A responsive and very helpful dealer (Sommer's of Mequon). He contacted SOA on my behalf and got them to agree to cover the cost of the HG replacement for only a $200 deductible. The whole repair: HG, water pump, tensioners, timing belt, etc. is only going to cost me $600! The previous dealer had offered no assistance and quoted me $2600+....

Thank you to everyone on this forum. I never would have known the right questions to ask or the right information to give without all of your previous posts.

Thanks again!

I also have had head gasket issues with same year/model car. I wish I'd found this forum before I bought my Subaru so that I would have know about this problem! My costs in Missouri are even higher than the first user quoted, so I will probably trade this car in and stay away from Subaru in the future.

My question to the forum is: Once a head gasket has blown, is it likely to happen again?
Thanks!

I've got a problem. Since I've had the head gaskets replaced, I have installed a new battery, and I also hosed down the engine bay to clean it. Now, twice in the past month, when I turn the key to start the car, the engine shakes VIOLENTLY and doesn't catch. I stop, try the key again and it starts. What gives?!?

Default pwned

And now it looks like I have to be added to the list of low-mileage HG problems. I too sought out an '03 because supposedly the HG issues were gone, and also because of the side air bags.

77k. I can definitely smell burning coolant if I sit at a light for more than a minute, or if I pop the hood open after driving a while.

This particularly burns me because, when I was shopping for a vehicle this last time, I had the list down to the Forester that I bought, and an '05 Sportage V6 4WD that had 10k fewer miles. I'm kicking myself now because my Kias have never EVER let me down, but I picked the Subaru for my long-standing relationship with them, the leather seats, and the slightly better fuel economy.

I know now that was an idiotic decision, that the 2.7L Hyundai Delta under the hood of the Sportage would have been a more reliable motor. I really should have known that as my wife has a Hyundai with the same exact motor that's at 90k with absolutely 0 non-maintenance work having been done to it.

Guess it's time to bite the bullet and find out how much the local shops want to rape me for this repair. Fortunately there are a couple good independent Subaru-only shops in my area.

My '03 XS needed HGs at 55,000 (under warantee) and then I just had to replace them again at 111,000. I pulled the engine and did them right this time so hopefully it will last more than 50,000 miles!

Default When did Scoobie Doos become disposable??

When I was growing up I always drove a Subaru GL because they would rot out before the engines let go.

Fast forward 20 years and I decide to go with an "ugly car", 04 Forester x again because they run and run and run only to buy a lemon that has had one issue after another only to have my HGs blow out at 95k.....2k outside of my extended warranty..FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUu
Subaru...I am going back to being a grown up and driving something that is not disposable.

Nice first and last post huh??!!

Just found this site. I have an '03 Forester 2.5XS-it also has leaking HG -found at 85,000. The leak is small and will be fixed with major stuff at 95,000. Question is this: will Subaru pay for part of the cost? It seems that it should have been a recall because it's a major problem. I thought they had fixed that problem before '02. Any help would be appreciated. Also, do I contact Subaru directly? I haven't used dealer for service because they are rip off artists. My Forester has been serviced regularly and it has never let me down-no other issues with it. Great in the deep snow as I hike and snowshoe. Thanks.
