My moonroof just died... 2003 SX
It groaned and struggled for a while, but kept working. I used lithium grease, and it was very happy ... but only for a few days, then back to struggling. Then one day it just stopped. Used the hand crank and last bit of life to close the glass, now it's silent. Anyone have this happen? Got it fixed? What was the problem? Estimated cost? From reading the threads, sounds like there may be problems/defects with Forester moonroofs, but Subaru hasn't recalled them (yet?). Help... feeling claustrophobic... need to open the roof and get some air ... sniff sniff sniff.... Ann |

Uh oh... this has me worried. My moonroof motor sounds very labored, and it's hella slow to open and close. I hardly use it anymore because I'm afraid it's just going to die on me one day. |

My sun roof acted funny once so far. Just this past weekend when I was parking I went to close it. I hit the button once and it went from full open to the partially closed position (where you have to hit the button again to fully close). I hit the button to close it and nothing happened. Hit it to open it, and nothing happened. I turned the car off and back on, then hit the close button and sure enough it closed. I haven't had a problem since.

This is how the problems with my VW sunroof started.
It turned out to be the "Comfort Control Module" on the car. Not sure if it's called the same thing on the Suburu, but its some sort of sensor that works the moonroof, auto door locks, keyless entry etc. |

So far.... the other items are working.... locks, windows, remote keyless...
I talked to a sunroof wizard (installs aftermarkets for Subaru in CT, in new vehicles)... he suggested resetting (which is no longer an option since it's dead), then said could be motor, but dealers are clueless and will replace everything. None of this is making me feel good. With high labor costs in this area, it could cost as much to repair as for a new one. I think it's time for Subaru to step up and admit there are some problems and help us out. They have a great moonroof, but it does have to work! :) |

You CAN replace the motor assembly by itself. Just FYI, I was looking around for the part number:
65450SA001 Retail ~ 260 I'd be up for the challenge if one ever fails...simply loosen the rear portion of the headliner and unbolt/bolt the new one in place, and connect the wiring harness.
