My dealer just told me my forester computer will learn my style of driving and the cvt will smooth out. It is lurching right now. I asked, "seriously?" He said yes. It doesn't work well with multiple drivers. Since I'm the only driver it should be fine. 2016 with 2,700 miles. He said it will take more mileage for the break in learning. Can anyone else confirm this?
Thanks for the replies. Not cold engine for me. It happens most of the time. But I don't step on it either, unless someone behind me is in a big hurry. But that's my driving style not to race the engine. Even when I do step on it the cvt doesn't respond immediatly. And stop and go traffic? Oh my goodness. Choppy, choppy, choppy. I find it isn't too peppy on the take off either. Should have had a longer test drive, I guess. Disappointed in Subaru. And, the "this is normal you'll get used to it", or "this will go away" answers from the dealer.
There are several issues with CVT-2.5i combo. One is lurching from stop. You will learn to moderate that a little; it will lessen over time; and it will never be nothing. The smoothest you can do is to let off the brake--wait while it idles forward--and then gently give it gas. Then there is the stutter/choppy acceleration problem. This seems to be a case of bad programming and is noticeable under very light throttle on slight up hills. For me this is mostly--but not entirely--a cold cvt problem. Same for the sense of nearly choking or dying from go. I think it's a form of the choppy acceleration (maybe I've given it too much gas). Happens rarely.
Here's the thing, none of them have been particularly predictable or reproducible for me. Yet they happen frequently enough.
One thing to do is to know the default programming. If you disconnect the battery for about a minute, the ECU (engine control) resets. That mode has a very predictable pattern to it, including the lurch from stop. Over time you will feel the operation change, but by over time I mean maybe 1k mi, and the change isn't super dramatic.
Yes, it has fuzzy logic like a lot of Vehicles over the years. You can clear memory by disconnecting the Battery then step on the brake to fully drain. Then carefully, reconnect the battery and start driving it will be retrain within a 100 miles. Now lets retrain you, 😂 if you let the Foz just sit( basically move on it's in just a moment) before easing on the accelerator then it is very smooth. Now on both my Subarus 2.5 and 3.6 is like silk and it does increase gas mileage. Note: you will most likely have to reset the passenger window to be controlled by the driverside no big deal.

Interesting! I had it to the dealer about a week ago because there was a scraping left front quarter panel, I figured the tire. The very first time it scraped the steering wheel vibrated so badly I stopped to check the wheel. It seemed okay, nothing caught up in the well. I turned right around and went home as I had not gotten very far. Of course, it just figures they could not find a problem and it did not repeat for them. But I asked them to check the cvt because I thought it was excessive lurching. I bet they took the battery terminals off. I had to re-pair my phone. And the situation has improved slightly. And I do understand it will never completely go away. Today the dealer thought the scraping may have been a stone got kicked up in the rotor hub assembly. I do commend my dealer for following up with me. And saying bring it in immediatly if the problem gets worse, no appointment needed.
Nice forum, nice people! Thanks. I'll check that passenger window too.
Sorry to hear that the 2016 2.5i w/ cvt still has that problem. My 2014 had it, and while it improved over time it always was there somewhat, especially with light pedal. After 45,000 + miles I finally had to do something, because I was not enjoying the drive at all. Just irritated the heck out of me.
Bought an XT, which has a better power/engine/transmission combination. Its still a CVT, but better.
For smooth operation, the Outback 2.5 is better, although underpowered. The six Outback is smooth as silk, and nice power.
