hello! just a quick noob question guys.. i'm planning to change the fluid for my automatic transmission and was wanting to replace the filter as well.

question:

do i need to replace the gasket as well? the reason i asked because i cant find any gasket/seals on our local subaru dealership that's why i dont know if i can just drain the AT fluid -> remove the transmission pan -> replace the AT filter -> put the transmission back on -> top up the AT fluid.

these are the parts that i have now:

1 AT filter
4 liters AT fluid

hoping for you replies.

thank you guys!

It's recommneded to replace the crush washer for the drain plug. Some people do, some people don't. I personally do replace it as its so cheap there's no reason not to.

Hi,

Got a pic of the '1 AT filter' you have?

The '98 shouldn't have a 'filter', unless you're referring to the 'screen' inside. In '99 they updated the trans w/an EXTERNAL spin-on filter, which is supposed to last the life of the car.

Also, in the owner's manual it'll tell you that the trans holds 10 US quarts. Your 4 qts will just be enough to replace what's in the pan.

I'd suggest reading up on here if you think you need to drop the pan...It's a pain and not necessary, IMHO.

I recommend just drain/refill/drive (shifting thru all gears) and repeat 3x. That'll get most of the old fluid out and you'll be good for another 30K miles.

TD

When did they start using drain plugs?

As far as I remember, even the debut of the 4EAT in the US in the 1990 Legacy had a drain plug. I have never seen a 4EAT without one.

Default ATF drain and fill

I did mine the other day. Pretty simple, and I was amazed at how dark the fluid was. I just removed the drain plug and then reinstalled plug and refilled. Refilling was the longest part due to waiting for the funnel to drain. I will repeat this process a few times and then get a new filter from Subarupartsgirl !!!

Thanks for the reply. I dont have the actual pic but here is the exact item that i have.

Part number: 38325AA032
Link: http://subarupartsforyou.com/cp_part...p?partid=10331

So the best way to do it is just drain the fluid, refill, drive then do it 3x.

That would be a lot easier than replacing the filter etc. etc.

I might just return the filter to the Subaru dealership and exchange it with 8 liters of AT fluid.
