Default Can I perform my own oil changes?

Im picking up my new 2010 Forester 2.5x Limited tomorrow, and I was wondering if I could perform my own oil changes without voiding the factory warranty?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, Yes you can do it yourself without any worries, many of us on here do our own oil changes. You can use any oil or filter you want too. I just buy my filters and a new crush washers for the drain plug from the dealer so I have some sort of receipt that the oil was changed.

Yes......... Wait, you are from Canada. Don't know if you have a Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act in Canada.

Not only can you do it, many here including my self highly recommend it. Get a notebook or some sort of ledger to keep written records. More than once I've given mine to the dealer to be photocopied. I'm not sure if it applies to Canada but if you go to My.Subaru Cookie Test Page and register there is a place for you to enter your oil changes and stuff too.

^^Yeah, like Peaty is saying. I use my.subaru.com to record all my maintenance and I do all my own oil changes on my forester.

Yes, much better to do your own maintenance. I also use My.Subaru.com to keep track of the work I do or have done on my Forester. I'm not sure it's available for those out of the States?

As you can tell, we highly recommend it. Only thing I ask is that you not start another thread asking which oil/filter is best. You'll never get a straight answer...

Yes, but use the Subaru filter bought from your dealer or online (preferably forum vendor) vendor. The Subaru genuine filter is the only known filter to have the correct bypass valve pressure specification of 23.2 psi. The closest commonly available after market brand filter to the pressure spec is Purolator at 14 - 18psi.

This pressure specification debate has been, well... debated, here and on BITOG (bobistheoilguy.com) fairly extensively and everyone has their own opinions, but it is my opinion to stick with the Subaru filter solely due to the bypass psi spec being correct and using an aftermarket filter usually guarantees you are using a part where bypass psi is incorrect for your application.

The Subaru filter is made by Honeywell Canada who also makes FRAM filters. FRAM's are hated by many but I have cut open the Subaru filter and while it shares design features with FRAM filters it has better media. And of course it is backed by Subaru.

While under the warranty, I use Subaru filters. It's just a good idea.

$ 7.86 tax included at my dealer for filter and crush washer. And you'll need 5 qts. Capacity with filter change is officially 4.2qts but mine takes at least 4.5 to reach F dot on disptick.

A buck for a crush washer is pure highway robbery for a nickle part, I'm am going into the crush washer business! I'll keep you updated with my progress. Soon, less expensive washres for all (except you drain valve guys ...)
