LOL

Yup, and by it, it seems that I had no problems with the transmission fluid. From what I gather is that he compared the results to oil that was only run for 36K miles, so with the other 20K on it, it looks like it did remarkably well!!

As for the rear diff, It too looks like it did well. It was compared to oil that had been in a vehicle with 58K miles, INCLUDING a change in between.

So in all, I guess the fluid that Subaru puts in holds up REALLY well! Good news for me since I left it in so long!

I will take their advise and resample when I put on another 40K miles.

I think sampling makes little sense. For the rear differential, you can do 3 oil changes for the price of sampling. If you have no largebuildup at the magnetic plug..forget the used oil analysis. Put your money into changing.

I am a fanatic on UOA's but in the case of my rear differential, I did 2 changeouts with Mobil-1 and one change out on the front Differential. All that within the first 15K miles. Now I have done 2 used oil analysis on the engine so far.

I did the first UOA of my 05XT. It's my first turbo so I'm always paranoid about noises and I live in a hilly area and only drive 3 miles a day. Results came back good though!

Why did you only run this for 1,100 miles? Do you change it that often?

Notice that there was some slight shearing which is typical for a lot of Energy Conserving xw-30's. M1 5w-30 starts at 11.3 cst's at 100C. Mobil 1 5W-30
The minimum for a 30 grade oil is 9.3 cst's.

I have a very short and hilly commute to/from the train station that is only 3 miles each way. I change my oil every 3-4 months, depending on how hard I drive the car over that period, and going back up the hills I do like to get on it. The 1,100 of driving was done over a 3 1/2 month period.

Wow, I run oil for 8,000 miles with uoa. 7 mile daily trips, towing, off-roading, driving in temps at 100F+, etc. If my oil can't stay the grade that it says on the bottle for 7,500 miles, I switch to something else.

Change it once a year at most.

Here is a UOA I did using blackstone at my NA forester.

For more see BITOG

Comments are welcome (Am I crazy using 5w20 ? )
Note that subaru manual recommends 0w20 till 40 degrees C.

However,

On the other hand, Redline 5w20 has a HTHS of 3.2, which is very high for a 20 weight oil.

Just got this one back. 6,000 miles on the oil. 20,200 miles on the vehicle. Driven very tamely and 50% Highway..5W-30 SuperTech Synthetic. I have gone 9700 miles on this oil in my Daughter's 08 N/A. Obviously this oil could have gone further. But we were having a spell of warm weather and I decided to change it. The viscosity is a very heavy 30 weight and I am not positive I believe it. The oil filter was a Subaru.

What a nice oil and nice wearing engine! Do you think the oil could have thickened from oxidation?

No. I have already run that oil in another subie to 9700 miles and an Acura at 8000 miles. But certainly you were right to suggest it.
