Looks like I'll need to switch to a thinner oil next winter. The fuel is not being burned off because of my short 5 mile commute (plus I'm running the oil for 7,500 miles). Usually excessive fuel causes the viscosity to go way down, but this German Castrol Syntec is amazing stuff. :)
First column is current (gold GC), second column gold GC w/6,144 miles, third column green GC w/5,930 and fourth is M1 5W30 w/5,774. Quote:

Here's my results @ 36383 miles - trending over time isn't that great -copper high, sodium climbing.....
Oil changed about every 3k or so, Also, oil is a 10w-30 but after 3k they've oserved its more like a 5w-30. The fuel and air filters are changed every 12k. At 3.20 gallon won't take me that long to recover the cost. Last edited by lfdal : 08-23-2006 at 12:02 PM. |

You should definitely have a Dyson Analysis performed. IMO, your copper, silicon and sodium are unusual for a Subaru with so few miles on the oil. Have you always run QS?
If you check the air filter forums at bitog, most of those guys say that air filters work better when slightly dirty. Changing every 12k might be too frequent. Are you running OEM oil and air filters? A viscosity of 57.5 SUS is in the low range of a 30 weight, but that isn't all that unusal for most Energy Conserving 30 weights used in a turbo in the summer. I run German Castrol 0W30 because it's thicker. Are you running any mods? Post this up at bitog. I'd be intereted in seeing what the experts have to say. :) edit: Did some searching at bitog: http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/...c;f=3;t=003371 Did a search with "Subaru copper" in the UOA forum. A couple of 2.5 turbo's came up (one was mine) and they had high copper due to break-in. It was 20 ppm. Found the above one and the guy found out he had a blown head gasket with a dyson analysis. Copper was normal though. -Dennis Last edited by bluesubie : 08-23-2006 at 07:30 PM. |

Dennis, thanks for the info.
At the next change I'll grab a sample and have a Dyson analysis done. I had one done way back a the first sample. Tonight I'll also take a look at bitog and see how I post over there. With the exception of 2 changes with Castrol 10w-30 SynBlend its always been QS 10w30 synblend. I agree, that at this point I'm not too thrilled with the engine wear. Hadn't heard that about air filters before - does that mean the air going in can be too clean? Or does having dirt in the filter help trap yet more dirt? I do know that both air filter's I've pulled out have been plenty dirty. In fact, maybe I'll draw a sample before the next change is due. Added pdf file...... Also - OEM filters, city / highway is about 80/20. Thanks again Larry Last edited by lfdal : 08-25-2006 at 04:15 PM. |

The folks at Blackstone are super nice.
I wanted to purchase an analysis of virgin M1 5W-40 truck & SUV to compare to my used oil reports. They provided for free a copy of one they did for themselves a while back. Here it is:

Congratulations on not shearing the oil down to a 30 weight.
![]() FYI, there are usually a lot of VOA's over on BITOG . -Dennis Last edited by bluesubie : 08-30-2006 at 11:12 AM. |

I saw those, but wanted a baseline from the same equipment mine was being tested with. Apples - apples.

I don't have photoshop, but I found a demo version of a PDF editor. There's an annoying watermark over the mileage slots, but I can just put that info into the post.
This is only my third time having this done. Usually I keep to closer to 3000 for oil changes, just happens to be the odd times that I don't that I've had samples taken. There was a major milage gap between the last change an this one, but still, I can't imagine that there should be a 1,750% jump in a wear metal. Attached is the blackstone report. The numbers that are covered up by the watermark are the total miles on the car From left to right they read 41,000: Unit/Location Averages: 28,800: 21,756

Check out the comments on bitog to ifdal's UOA that also showed high wear metals. You might want to try a thicker oil. Not necessarily a 40 weight since it's nearly winter, but even a 30 weight that meets European ACEA 3 requirements would be thicker and more shear stable than M1 5W30.
ifdal's UOA Found this list of ACEA oils on nasioc: http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html -Dennis Last edited by bluesubie : 09-15-2006 at 11:47 AM. |
