During the last oil change interval I had a coolant system failure. The radiator split at the top where the plastic meets the aluminum. I had to drive with no coolant to a safe spot. Needless to say, the temp gauge was pegged high whenever the engine was running.
Everything turned out OK! Here is the engine oil analysis: ![]()

I was planning on changing the oil out at 11250 miles as per the manual, but as per usual, my plan went bye-bye. Just before my target change date, we got a call that my Uncle passed away and we had to make it to a funeral in NYC. No time to do the change, so we jumped in the car and made the 1250 mile trip in just over 17 hours. Before we left, I had added a total of 1/2 quart of make up oil. If you do the math, you can figure out why the other quart was needed. We were traveling 3 digit speeds for a while, but mostly running 80-90 (eating gas like mad) and the Sube engines don't like that much (unless you run a thicker oil). I added 1/2 qt in Fayetteville and the other half in NYC. We took it easy going home (65-70) and added no oil (it was down less than 1/4 when we got home) I'm glad I use a 40 weight oil, otherwise I probably would have had to put in much more. The oil was dropped the day after we returned home and sent in for the analysis. Since then, I've put on another 2k+ miles and haven't had to add anything yet. We're going to Dallas next week and will probably do another change when we return. Stay tuned. I guess the equation should be: boost = oil consumption. Plan your oil weight choice to match your climate AND driving style.

You should try German Castrol Syntec 0W30. It's very shear stable and I've seen some great results in 2.5T's over at bitog, including someone that ran it in an STi with 45 passes at the drag strip with over 4k miles on it. Here's my last: Quote:

The next time I can plan a 17 hr/ 1250 mile trip (not!) I'd probably go with the M1 15w50. Generally, I'm happy with the M1 product. This oil cycle was a fluke. Thanks for the feedback.

I finally found my Blackstone report from last year. I will probably have another one done after the next oil change at 60k. On a side note... I just noticed the mileage on this report and realized that I've nearly doubled the mileage on Subed within the last year. :drive:

I really need to remember to order some kits one of these days. With 3 boosted vehicles and one of them at 160k miles, plus an 18 year-old rotary, it's information I need to get. Guess I'll get with my brother and see if he wants some kits, too.

Don't you know that thin is in? :-) There are probably thousands of people driving around with oil that sheared down to a 20 weight. If you're concerned about the shearing, go with an ester based synthetic and see how that holds up (GC, Motul 300V, Redline, etc.). -Dennis |

Well, I finally got my kit in the mail this past weekend. I can't wait to send in the sample after my next oil change.
