2009 Mazda RX8 oil filter

There was a discussion over on LegacyGT.com regarding the oil filters for the RX8.

Apparently, they have the same diameter and thread pitch, and the same internal pressure relief valve rating as Subaru filters... just longer.

They are even manufactured by the same folks, Tokyo Roki!

The BITOG thread: 5 different Subaru filter options - cut open pics - Bob Is The Oil Guy

Mazda PN N3R1-14-302

The cheapest I found is $6.25/ea for a case of ten here: Mazmart Shopping Cart

According to Mazda boards, they are a reputable vendor.

If any of our lovely supporting vendors can get Mazda parts, we might be able to get a bit of a hookup.

I'm going to order a case shortly so I have a filter in time for my rapidly approaching 30k!

Cool

Interesting!

Discussion and pics thread from LGT forum: Mazda RX-8 Tokyo Roki oil filter for 2.5GT

They appear to be $6.95 each at Rosenthal Mazda in Arlington, VA. It's not clear if this is an internet-only price or if it also includes OTC.

Thanks!

The longer length could be an issue bc of proximity to the exhaust. But I have taken that stupid trap door off s..In either case its probably OK.

I still have a dozen of the Black Roki's

Good find.

Be careful what you wish for.

I was worried about the length, but I can't see it being a huge issue.

I'll have to take a look under the car when I do my 30k and see if it would be possible to fabricate a sheet-metal oil filter heat shield of some sort. That might quench any problems.

I see no problem with added oil capacity and increase filter medium. I won't increase my OCI's, but $6.25 isn't much more expensive than the filters I use now.

My concern was also with the length and exhaust heat.

Nice find LGT and Phil. I will check back for more info.

I duno, I used to run long filters like that from Penzoil. Didn't have any issues. If you have a skid plate, maybe. But otherwise, it was just fine. THanks for the heads up! Glad we might have a good alternative after I run out of Tokyo Rokis!

Nice find, I've been wondering about Mazda filters for a while since they're made by Tokyo Roki. I still have a good stash of the black Subie filters, but I might give these a try once we run out. Hubby still gets one heck of a discount at his old workplace (Marin Mazda-Subaru), too...

I might be able to set something up if we have enough interest.

Cool

Make sure you get the right one, for the S2 RX-8 ('09-'12) - the older S1 ('04-'08) takes the stubby filter like the Subaru.

I own an RX8 and have dealt with Paul at Mazmart for eight years, he's the best place to buy Maz Bits.

I use the purolator pl14610 at times (instead of the pl14612), which is basically the same as the subaru version but longer like that mazda one, haven't had any issues. However with the longer filter, it will be the lowest point on the car (aside from maybe the downpipe). So if you offroad it may not be the best idea (and might not clear some skidplates).

-edit-

Turns out the PL14610 IS the filter spec'ed by purolator for the 09+ RX8, so there should be no issue using the mazda version! (its also listed for a lot of mazda/ford/infiniti/nissan/dsm/honda/acura etc cars). Looks like this tokyo roki mazda filter will be perfect as it does have the higher bypass pressure (the purolators have pretty high bypass pressure compared to most other aftermarket ones, but not quite as high as the subaru/mazda oem ones)

Just a note, its only the 09+ that have the bigger can and higher relief pressure, the pre09 filters are the same as the aftermarket subaru ones (ie 11-18psi, and short)

Has anybody used this 09+ rx8 filter yet N3R1-14-302? I just bought a case, so I hope they work?

I'll be dissecting some filters soon. I found some made in Japan filters that may be relabled Tokyo Roki-should be here soon. Anybody want to send me a black Subaru OEM filter to compare with the blue Subaru OEM, 3 different made in Japan/Malaysia filters coming, and the N3R1-14-302 RX8 filters? I'll take pics and check out the bypass spring pressure.

Regards,
