2000 Forester Key Fob

I'm a little rusty on this scenerio and need some advice, bought a 2000 Forester L a few months back, didn't come with a key fob (I know keyless entry is standard on the L series) I got a key fob (subaru of course) that has the lock/unlock buttons, * and options. Wondering if i can program this fob to the car for lock/unlock function. I don't really care for the remote start option (nor do i have the control unit for that). If this will progam. How do i program. There is no 8 digit code printed inside the fob, is this the type that you program by putting the car in program mode (close door once, turn key 10 times till signaled by beep) and then hit lock on the fob till it make the car lock ? I don't have the battery for the fob yet and don't want to buy one if this fob won't work for my car. Thanks
