'17 Forester Front End Locked Up

My '17 Forester is sitting at the dealership, by the dumpsters where they shoved it off the flatbed, after its first big drive and I'm trying to get some armchair quarterback (or pro) help because the dealer hasn't even been able to move it into a service bay to look at it.

The details: I bought it on Thursday with 24 miles on it, and drove it home (about 35 miles) with no issues. On Saturday morning, I left on a weekend trip when a few miles from home I heard a bang/pop and then some grinding and was able to pull over to the shoulder on the highway before the front end locked up. Once I ascertained that it wasn't a flat tire, I got back in, and put it in drive and all it did was race like it was in neutral...no movement whatsoever. Once the tow came, they had a difficult time winching it up the tilt flatbed because the front tires were locked up.

The dealership hasn't been able to look at it, yet since it was brought in on a Saturday but thought I'd see if anyone wants to take a stab at what it could possible be. Much thanks...and best wishes for a good outcome!

Welcome to the forum from Long Island, NY.
Sorry to hear about the issue, with a brand new vehicle, certainly I do not want to be on your shoes.
If the flatbed truck took to the dealer on a Saturday, do not expect the guys to drop everything that they were working on to take care of your car. Today is Monday and probably after they finish with was in schedule for today they will bring it in and start to check things up.
Not an expert, just a guess like the other members said, looks like transmission or maybe the hill assist break. Good luck and keep us posted with the progress.

I figured it was likely something with the transmission, and know that the team will likely not get it to until later in the week. I appreciate the assist! I'm hoping this is a once in a lifetime, freak occurrence issue...

The backstory is I went from dealing with transmission/clutch/recall issues with my (former) commuter car for the last few years that I was looking forward to a vehicle with no issues. I probably didn't help that I was already weary of buying a vehicle with CVT because of previous 'similar' issues with a different brand...and that it had less than 75 miles on it when decided to conk out. The dealers were very thorough about reassuring me that their CVT were all being used for some time and didn't have issues. I'm hoping this is not the case.

If it ends up being a transmission problem, call Subaru of America (1-800-SUBARU3) and complain about having such a major problem so early on. Try to get them to give you an extended warranty or even swap your vehicle for a new one.

Yes,I would talk to SOA right away without much further ado.Given that its just couple day and miles.I would want a new car after putting down 30K. Document each and everything..even the calls to dealership and SOA.
Considering that this gonna being in your thoughts through the ownership of car, replacement of CAR and not CVT is way to go.Good luck

So, after calling Subaru of America, who were very kind and helpful, I got a call back from the dealer...and they are ordering a new transmission for the vehicle. I know that I'm going to be worrying every time I get in it that it's going to be just like the former Ford...and keep having issue. But, if nothing else, I now know for sure what it was...thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Let Subaru of America know your concerns with having a major repair before hitting 100 miles. Hopefully they will be able to get you an extended warranty at the least.

Off to the wrong start with the brand, that's for sure. My father put 125K on his '12 Legacy with the CVT, and I logged 58K on my '14 XV CVT with no issues. Someone is going to get the broke one too bad it was you.

Keep up with the repair through the service dept and SOA. I think you now have some leverage for a Gold Package Extended Warranty, free Oil Service for life, State Safety inspection, Filters, all the service intervals for free, and ..... May be a blessing in disguise.

Nice thought but getting a new will not happen. The warranty does not state "get new car if break down".
