Default Currently Stage 3...looking for just a bit "more"

Well it will be almost 2 years since I went Stage 3, and quite frankly, I am looking for a little bit more pep. Not that the car isn't fun to drive already, but I guess I already got used to the power it is putting down at the moment. Maintaining a daily driver is important to me.

The route I want to go is very minimal with just swapping out the current VF41 to something a tad bigger, all the while keeping the 650cc injectors. Needless to say, with these size injectors it will be a conservative tune. With that said, what would be my best bet - 18g, 20g, etc? Right now I'm putting down 312hp/320tq at the hubs per the Dynapack. I'm looking for more power in the ~350 - 375whp territory as I do not want to grenade my stock tranny. Of course I will get re-tuned and a high-performance clutch.

It would be nice to have linear power, but I wouldn't mind more top-end power either. Is it worth even upgrading to something bigger than a VF with 650cc injectors? I was also thinking of going EWG, but I don't think the added noise will be passenger friendly. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Here's what she has right now:

- PnP/ceramic coated VF41 turbo (purchased BNIB)
- Ceramic coated/heat wrapped Grimmspeed up pipe
- Perrin turbo inlet
- DW 650cc injectors
- Walbro 255 fuel pump
- PnP TGV deletes
- 3mm Grimmspeed phenolic spacers
- PnP/ceramic coated/heat wrapped exhaust manifold runners
- Ceramic coated/heat wrapped Grimmspeed crosspipe
- Grimmspeed 3 port EBCS
- 2007 STi TMIC
- Cobb SRI/airbox
- Cobb TBE
- Grimmspeed AOS

Do you have E85 available? Re tune it for that and you'll get a "new" feeling, at least for a while. :-)

Otherwise a 20g and larger injectors, see what Nate has done. He is very happy with that upgrade.

:-)

Unfortunately, E85 isn't as abundant as it is everywhere else. Also with E85, I thought you needed at the very least 1000cc injectors?

EDIT - Who is Nate? Do you have a link to his post?

I run 850's on my 18G and am about 85% IDCs, but I am also at altitude.

18g probably wont get you there on pump gas. 20g will but you will need bigger injectors.

I am also running e85 - 850's with a vf39 and at 23psi I am also in the 80% arena. I am also running a dw305 fuel pump. Definitely adds some "wee" factor.

You guys are so lucky to have multiple gas stations in your area with E85. Right now I have to settle with crappy California 91 octane. So from what I gather, it sounds like my injectors are the bottleneck at this point.

Injectors and turbo if you don't have a choice in fuel. ID1000 and a 20G, just like the rest of us are going. ;-)

I was under the impression that 300-325 whp as about as far as you want to push a stock tranny. Thats the main reason Im sticking with the VF43 right now but upgraded to 1000cc injectors and forged internals so when the tranny bites it I can upgrade that and move up to the 20G area. That seemed like the logical course.

I was on the fence about getting injectors for my vf48 Im about to have installed. I think I may just do it and get a e85 tune as well.

Torque is what kills the tranny. You can make 350 whp and the same max torque as 300 whp, just use a bigger turbo that can make target boost later in the powerband. I think a car tuned that way is easier on the tranny, a 20G or similar sized turbo will ramp up the boost a little more gradually, thus shocking the drivetrain less. I'll attach an old dyno comparison that shows what I mean.

How about something like an MD321 turbo? Somewhat costly but I've seen some serious figures on the 2.5 engines with these. They also have a pretty low spool up (around 2.5K) and pull hard all the way to the redline without dropping pressure. There are variants too with ceramic coating and/or billet compressor wheels. But, as said above, you are approaching the limits on your tranny but unless you use all this power on a regular basis, like track or drag strips, even though you are passed the specified tolerance, it should be ok for the odd crazy burst, I would have thought?

Thanks for the responses, guys. Any recommendations as to where I can get my ID1000's at the best possible price? I think I will go for the 20g in the near future, but now the questions is: which one? lol
