I'm still getting at least 21mpg mostly stop and go traffic and I'm dumping fuel like crazy right now.

The theory is correct...however that is only if you are driving off boost all the time on the new turbo. I seem to have lost 2-3 mpg with my new injectors and turbo, then again I'm not exactly sissy footin around town! hahaha

Very true. This is one case where "lag" is your friend. It's easy to stay out of boost when it doesn't come on early.

IHI VF39 - These turbos are developed for 2.5L that run on poor gas. These are a good combination for this vehicle IMO. Just watch out for boost creep due to improper WG design or running with a catless exhaust.

IHI VF34 - These turbos are developed for 2.0L that run on great Japanese pump gas. They are designed to run higher boost on 2.0L engines then to taper boost quickly by redline. These turbos usually run out of air on a 2.5L engine. These have never performed well at our elevation and these are a bad combination for a 2.5L IMO. This turbo may work well at sea level.

Evo3 16G - This turbo usually works best on a 2.0L and I love to use these on 2.0L engines. A 2.5L engine usually uses a 18G or a 20G for a better match.

A good tuner should be able to use AVCS to almost eliminate turbo lag on the 4EAT.

Take care,
Christian.
Very interesting comment about the VF39. Designed for the 2.5l that run on poor gas...we certainly have that here in Cali. It would be interesting to qualify that...how do you design a turbo for poor gas? and what in the VF39/VF43 supports that requirement?

What made you decide to pick the blouch Andy?

Yeah, or FP?

With the Blouch, do you have to buy the $119 actuator upgrade?

Default Which turbo

Thought Id weight in a give my 2 cents. I have an 07 XT Automatic. Heres the list of mods I just applied:
  • STI TMIC
  • STI Hood scoop
  • Cobb Catted Downpipe
  • VF39 Turbo
  • SPT Cold Air
  • UTEC Delta
Important step:
Once I had these mods applied I immediately had the car tuned by Clark.
Drivability:
After the tune the car accelerates in a straight line really nice.
small Negative:
The auto tries to "help" from time to time by dropping the car into a lower gear at inopportune times which throws the RPMS into the 5K range (why?). Once in 4th , the car accelerates smoothly.
Gas Mileage:
I drive around 40 miles day to day, in traffic in town, on the highway also. I get about 17 mpg post tune. This is lower than my stock 20 mpg but the fun far out weighs the cost at the pump. I also have 2 maps - one 16psi and one 18psi.
Overall:
I feel like I found a good balance between $$$ spent, daily driving characteristics, ease on the stock transmission, performance and fun.

I guess my point is, don't over think the turbo - as you will eventually have to spend some $$$ on getting your car tuned. Since you can never get the full potential of these upgrades by just slapping an OTS Stg 2 map on our 2.5L engine. I still haven't had mine dynoed so I have no idea on WHP but it feels fast to me and that should count for something.

well I chose the blouch mostly based off reading about the fact that they use the larger compressor housing and that they used the 8cm exhaust housing. And when it comes down to it the price is very good right now with them offering it for only $989 on their web site. I don't know you would find an FP with the same setup for less than that. I would have liked to buy used, but of course when I was looking there were zero to be found. My new turbo showed up at my house and what do you know there were like 3-4 on Nasioc. I just wish I could get my car running properly so I could give a real evaluation on the turbo.

Sorry missed that second question.. It comes with a 9 psi WG and that is what I got. You do not have to buy the upgraded WG's. I'm not totaly sure what good they would do for our applications.

Yeah you definately dont need the WG actuator upgrade.

As for what Christian said, I agree and disagree.

The bottom line is that while he is dead on about what he says, he misses one key element.

yes, The EVO3 does work AMAZINGLY well on a 2.0L

However, being larger than the 39 or 43, its STILL better than either of those on a 2.5.

Really, they are all too small.

But of the 3, pick the largest.

Well, I decided on a VF39 right now with a Cobb AP and then buy a tactrix cable and play with open source. There is so much support out there for the VF39, so many maps and people running this setup that I feel good about giving it a shot.

I think that even though the Evo3 16g is bigger than the VF turbos, it's price is so close to a 18G that I'd hold out and go for that I think.

If I decide I want something more later, then I'll go with either the Blouch 18G that Integrity recommended, or step up to the 20G.
