I have a 2004 Forester 2.5L Turbo and I need to replace the turbo. I would like a used OEM part, but there are not many out there specifically for this vehicle. I see that it uses a Mitsubishi TD04 turbocharger. I am wondering if there are any other vehicles (Subaru or other) that I can get a turbo off of to replace this one with. I prefer to not have to use any adapters or make any alterations. I've read that it uses the same turbo as the Impreza WRX, although that is a 2.0L (did they make a 2.5L?) and this is a 2.5L...would that make a difference? Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thank you. Todd
Hit up the Member Classifieds area to find a good one that someone has replaced with a turbo upgrade. If that doesn't turn up anything, maybe start a "WTB" thread asking for offers of used TD04s. Try using an "advanced search" for td04 in the Member Classifieds section. I found a lot of hits that way.
How soon do you need the Turbo? I'm going to be upgrading in the coming months and will sell my td04. Its stock from a 2007 forester XT, clean with only about 30k miles on it.
There are dozens, if not hundreds of us here that have low-mileage TD04s we'd love to part with for under $200. Don't forget, WRX uses a very similar TD04 that will bolt right up.
Now would be a good time to consider upgrading to a larger turbo, you can do it for around $1200 including supporting mods if you shop around carefully.
As far as non-Subaru turbos -- nope. Subaru is weird and uses a funky flange. Don't bother, Subaru turbos are cheap and plentiful, if you don't have luck on this site -- check out classifieds of nasioc.com, i-club.com and clubwrx.net.
