Dash light color change?

I've been looking lately and found a few different places with tutorials for changing the color of dash/radio lights. But nothing for how to do it on a forester. I'm sure the set up is slightly different on every car so I want to make it's done right. Anyone know of any places with tutorials that would help me on how to do this with an '04 FXT?

I am interested in this too. There are some posts on NAISOC, but nothing specific for the Forester.

i do recall a member here changing his, he used blue since the green tint from factory on the back side of the gauges of the cluster has a hard time with other colors projecting through....

I am pretty happy with the outcome of mine. I did most of my driving at night in a 200 mile a day commute. I wanted to make the interior a lot darker - and I succeeded.
  • I removed the green bulb "condoms" and simply painted the bulbs with red Vitrea (from craft store) glass paint. You can do the same for other bulbs if you want them less bright (hi-beams, etc). The best color would be amber, but cannot be achieved this way - just makes the green greener.
  • I wanted to have each group of instruments illuminated with a different color light: engine/driving red, HVAC/windows blue, radio amber, but I did not have so much luck. The blue was too dark, radio face is fluorescent and the HVAC LEDs do not take well to being painted.
  • I did manage to darken down the radio face with window tint; but with (my) age, the fluorescent display has faded and I need to remove some tint to see in the day. Same for the auto trans gear indicator - that one was a major pain to do - I carefully inserted a tint between the gauge face back and the green tint sheet behind it with tweezers.
Somethingn to keep in mind - daylight demands bright instrument illumination, but nighttime driving lends itself to darker displays. To achieve this, I think the best thing to do would be to find the lights-on resisitors (that dim dash lights when running lights are on) and replace them with higher-value resistors; I just don't know how to do that.
