Default Subaru Forester And Impreza Boxer Diesel Bringing 37 MPG To Paris Motor Show

BOXER DIESEL FORESTER AND IMPREZA UNVEILED AT PARIS MOTOR SHOW

Subaru’s highly-acclaimed new Boxer Diesel engine will appear for the first time in both the new Forester and Impreza at the 2008 Paris Motor Show (October 4-19).

Meanwhile, other highlights include a Subaru Impreza WRX2008 replica plus the Subaru R1e and G4e electric cars. There will also be a 50th Anniversary Display showcasing the original Subaru 360 minicar.

Subaru’s press conference takes place on the Subaru stand at 17.00 hours on Thursday, October 2, 2008.

New Boxer Diesel Forester And Impreza
Both the new Forester SUV and Impreza five-door will be unveiled featuring Subaru’s highly-acclaimed new 2.0 litre Boxer Diesel engine.

The world’s first horizontally-opposed diesel engine for a passenger car has won widespread praise for its refinement, smoothness, sharp throttle-response and outstanding fuel economy. It first appeared in the Legacy and Outback earlier this year.
Both the Forester and Impreza Boxer Diesels feature new six-speed manual gearboxes while the engine itself benefits from a new closed-type diesel particulate filter.

Such is the efficiency of the new engine that the Forester 2.0D boasts class-leading fuel economy and emissions.

No other SUV can better the 44.8 mpg Combined and 167 g/km of the Forester 2.0D X.

The Forester 2.0D produces 147 PS and 258 lb ft torque and the Impreza 150 PS and 258 lb ft – both at 3,600 rpm and 1,800 rpm respectively.

The engine’s benefits include exceptional compactness, light weight and a low centre-of-gravity which benefits handling agility and makes best use of the standard all-wheel drive system.

The new Forester Boxer Diesel goes on sale in the UK in late September and the Impreza Boxer Diesel in January 2009.

Hey that's 37.3 MPG in US gallons! So probably a range of about 33 to 42 MPG City/Highway. Good enough for me and with the 6MT that'll be a very sweet driver. SOA, bring it now please instead of waiting until 2010.

This article mentions two different Miles Per Gallon ratings of the new Boxer Diesel Engine: 44.8 MPG and 37 MPG. Since the British Gallon is larger than the US Gallon, it appears that 44.8 is the UK MPG, and 37 MPG is the US MPG.

Ref: OnLineConversion - Volume
1 gallon [UK] = 1.200 949 925 5 gallon [US, liquid]
1 gallon [US, liquid] = 0.832 674 184 63 gallon [UK]

There are a few considerations we need to take into account.
The first is cost in two sub categories:
first-are diesel cars going to cost more than gas
second-cost of diesel vs gas-by me presently diesel is selling approx 70c per gallon more than 87 grade regular.
If the answer to the first sub category is yes, what is the breakeven point between cost of car vs increase MPG

A consideration we have to take into account more seriously, how clean does diesel gas run??

They should (and will) cost more for diesel. If we figure a $2,000 premium for the diesel, that could be fair. If we use some older numbers (and even inaccurate numbers) and say that gas is $4/gallon and diesel is $4.70/gallon. This is only a 17% premium for fuel. Considering the EPA numbers, you are looking at a near 50% increase in fuel economy.

This is a good indicator of cost of ownership. To me, it makes a lot of sense to go diesel.

Forester sales in Australia are going through the roof. August 2008 sales of the ever-popular compact SUV pulverised every competitor in the class.

Even Toyota’s super successful RAV4 took a hiding with just 922 units against Forester’s 1,534 sales.

Subaru Australia would be over the moon as they held a 23.3 percent market share in the category, with Toyota managing just 14.0 percent.

And it’s about to get even better for them, at least in Europe, with the unveiling of their highly acclaimed 2.0 litre Boxer Diesel engine powered Forester and Impreza five-door ranges at the Paris Motor Show, in October.

Where not sure when or if, Australia will see the world’s first horizontally opposed diesel engine, but we hope its sooner rather than later, given its stellar performance and fuel efficiency benefits.

The Forester 2.0D produces 108kW (145hp) at 3,600 rpm and 350Nm at 1,800 rpm with astonishing fuel economy to boot. You’ll be hard pressed to find any SUV than can better the 5.2 litres/100km combined figure.

It also attracts a big “green” tick too, pushing out just 167g/km CO2 emissions clearly benefiting from a Subaru designed closed-type particulate filter.

But while the engine might be new to the Forester and Impreza line up, it has been employed in Europe under the bonnet of the Legacy (Liberty in Australia) and Outback, since earlier this year. Both vehicles will feature a standard six-speed manual gearbox. There is no mention of an auto box which will obviously limit sales although, it must be said, most Europeans (that’s both sexes) are competent with a manual shift.

It’s hats off to the Subaru engineers for achieving what many said couldn’t be done with the lightweight Boxer set up.
Although the blocks are same, every other part of the engine structure, including the fuel-injection system, had to be strengthened to accommodate the higher forces of diesel compression.

While the engine is said to be noisy at idle (show me a small diesel that isn’t) Subaru say they have rolling sound levels to 70.5 decibels, which is said to be lower than that of a Rolls Royce Phantom.

While that sounds impressive, it s not quite a fair comparison given the Rolls is powered by a 6.75 litre V12 monster. Still that sort of dB level is class leading.

Another thing to consider is that, because diesel engines are built stronger, they usually last longer than gasoline engines. If the rest of the vehicle is built as strong as the engine, the diesel models should retain a better resale value for longer as well.

Take Care,
David Baldock

You lucky Ontarians! Here diesel has just dropped to $1.38/litre (it was $1.56 last week) and regular self serve is $1.33/litre.

I'll always choose diesel over gas if given the choice, simply because the efficiency is much better and for those of us who keep our vehicles for the long term, the diesel engine will last.........I have many friends with 400,000 kms + on their old diesel rabbits and mercedes' and I know a guy with over 300,000 kms on his smart fortwo. Not too many K cars or Chevettes like that!

I'm more than excited about the Diesel. When my Foz breaks the 120K barrier, I'll be getting into the new Foz diesel. I'll miss the performance of my current Foz, but I have a long time to enjoy it (I'm only at 45K).

I think I'll pass on the Diesel and wait for the G4e (Good 4 the earth) to go into production. Apparently it is much more advanced than any other plug-in electric prototype at present. It might be sooner rather than later...

Nope!

Even though I live in a rural area I have never taken my Foresters off-road as such. There are some roads out here that are pretty rough (especially in Winter) but none that could be defined as off-road.

By the time I am ready to trade in this baby and get an electric Subie, I will most likely be living in a retirement community somewhere closer to an urban centre. Even a Florida style golf cart machine would probably do
