Default Working with Subaru plastic pop-rivets

Yesterday I swapped-out my headlight bulbs for some new ones, and I had my first exposure to Subaru's version of plastic pop rivets on the 2010. They seem to look like normal interior plastic rivets but with a flathead screw on the top and a small shaft that serves to bend out the prongs to prevent them from coming back out.

How are these things supposed to work? Are they supposed to be turned with a screwdriver? pried-up with a screwdriver? How are you SUPPOSED to reinsert them? I got them back together, but not very gracefully. I just wanted to know if anyone had advice on working with these buggers.

you'll find a number of different styles. The type with the crosshead screw on top, you "undo" the screw then pull the rivet body up; push in to reinstall.
Others have four recesses in the rivet body that you can pry under to pop the centre out. Don't try to pull the whole rivet out by it's centre, it's easier to pop the centre then pull the rivet outer. Same when inserting, if the core is too far in or out it'll keep the body expanded too far...

I HATE them. I've pulled both my front and rear bumpers (replaced the rear). Replaced all the dang rivets with zipties, after I broke most of them trying to get them off.

So I finished the fog light install. There were about 14 pop-rivets to be removed and the entire front-end just comes right off. It is amazing how little there is that holds that thing together--not a real screw in the entire apparatus.

Two pop rivets were different and both broke when I removed them. These two were inserted from the underside of the wheel-wells and have thinner shafts without a center insert--maybe a 1/8th inch or 3/16th inch in diameter. They broke when I removed them and now I need to find a replacement. Does anyone have any elegant ideas. I guess I could get some from Subaru, but I am not even sure what to call them.

LOL sorry fike. I've got my front and rear bumpers held on with zip ties no issue. Good luck with your plastic rivet search!

try showing some to the parts people at any auto parts store, sometimes they "get it", and sometimes? (being engineering and mechanically inclined) i just smile, i have looked and found fasteners of all types.
i use zip ties daily at work, one can get creative with them if you think about it. lol
