So, once again, my windshield took a rock. This time it can't be filled, big crack all the way across. But that's not my problem, this is:
The glass place tells me that in order to get a replacement windshield that comes with the original "third visor" shaded dot pattern in the upper windshield area, I have to get "dealer glass" not "OEM" - they have to actually go buy it at the dealership - because the replacements from PPG and Pilkington supposedly do not have the third visor shading. The dealer glass is $200+ more than the OEM glass!!!! Has anyone else run into this? If so, did you just go with the OEM, and if so, can you tell a difference when driving? I'm short (5'2") and always have the visors down to reduce glare; I'm wondering if I could get by with the OEM or if I will be thoroughly annoyed by the extra light coming in. I hate to pay $200 for this, especially when it seems like these vehicles go thru windshields like oil changes, but if it is a safety matter, of being able to see, then I'll bite the bullet and do it. For those who don't know, I'm NOT talking about the stripe all the way across the top - I'm talking about the dipped-down shading that completely encircles where the rear view mirror mounts.

Not using Safelite. Long story that I won't get into here. Can you tell what the numbers are on your windshield? So maybe we can figure out what manufacturer it is from?

If it's really an additional $200, what if you just cut some of the tinted window cling material to the size you want, and put it in the same place? Just an idea.

Th eglass places around me say they get glass from PPG, Pilkington, and one other place that I forgot that isn't Carlex. Anybody gotten a replacement from one of those companies recently? If so, did it have the "third visor" tint?

I got my 2010 forester used last summer, and it has a PPG replacement windshield. I have no idea when or where it was installed but it does have the shading behind the rear view mirror that you're looking for. The glass does seem to be low quality if that is possible, I can never seem to get it really clean, as i can with the other windows (rest of the car is original). I wish the windshield was a Subaru replacement, but oh well.

I just had my windshield replaced yesterday with a Pilkington. 2011 Forester, non heated windshield. Replaced by the contracted company that replaces the windows at the local subaru dealer.
If you get it replaced, have the tech dab some window glue on the spot where your rear view attatches to the base on the windshield. It will remove all the vibration in the rear view that plagues 2009-2013 foresters. My tech said this is what he does for all the complaints that the local subaru dealer gets re: vibrating rear views |

Interesting, I am curious to hear how this plays out, as we just suffered a casualty with our 2012 Forester. Base of the windshield, rock hit right under the passenger wiper, but the crack is now stretched all the way over to the driver side.
