I found that the sandpaper method described is a great way of doing it, but is very time consuming. So I found out a much better and faster way which is pretty much dummy proof.

Step 1 - buff the lens with a metal polish (mothers metal and mag polish is what I use)
Step 2 - scratchx or another form of fine abrasive polish (using a clean rag)
Step 3 - PlastX (a new clean rag)
Step 4 - Wax

This method is meant for more serious and deeper damage that polish simply can't correct. I mention in there that for minor and surface damage PlastiX is the better way. But for the pitting that reaches ~1/4 - 1/2mm into the surface or the intense damage that had been done to the SVX light after 17 years the sand paper works the best.

My headlights has turned yellow all over. But when I lightly scratch them with my finger nail the yellow came off pretty easy. Can I start with 1000 grit instead of 600?

Why don't you just go with the easier method first in Post #16 if you don't have deep pits.

Thanks techy for the writeup. I appreciate your effort in doing the writeup and taking the pictures. This was a huge effort on your part. And sharing it with us is super.

+1 Just use some elbow grease and PlastX, it should take care of you. The sanding is really only for deep damage.

Is the UV protector supposed to be sprayed on before or after the plastix polish?

The UV protector would be the final thing to put on. You may want to practice on a piece of clear plastic first to make sure you can get a nice clean/clear coat.

Thanks Techy101 for the info on this annoying problem.

Will try using Plastix and elbow grease to start. Then UV blocking clearcoat to finish. Will keep everything on the cars to save time. Too many other tasks in the day, so I need to prioritize. Doing headlights on the 2001 Forester, then the 98 Acura CL. Will get back to you and everyone if short form worked for me.
