Default Hood doesn't pop-up

The hood on my '01 Forester L doesn't pop-up when I pull the inside latch. There must be some way to adjust it, but I can't figure it out. The hood is not damaged and the sides are flush with the fenders. The only way I can open it is to prop a big screw driver under the interior latch to keep it open; then I can pull up on the hood. Obviously, I want the hood to pop-up an inch or so when I pull the interior latch. Can someone tell me how to fix it?

Sound like it needs some lube or the spring is missing.

Does it feel any different from normal when you pull the release lever? If it feels extremely loose, then you probably have a broken or disconnected cable. If it feels about normal, then the problem is probably somewhere in the latch mechanism.

One way or another, this sounds like it might merit a trip to the junkyard. But start with a good spray of WD40 (or equivalent) down into the latch mechanism. It can't hurt.

Default WD40 fixed it

Your idea worked. I hosed the latch down with WD40 (mechanic in a can) and it works great. Thanks for the help!

Glad to hear it!

My Forester is currently exhibiting the opposite symptoms. The hood won't stay latched and is currently secured with a piece of twine. But I think I'll start with the same treatment, since WD40 cures all ills.

Sure enough, even though the symptoms were the opposite, a few squirts of penetrant (I used KB because it was close at hand) appear to have returned the hood latch to proper operation. I haven't given it a heavy duty road test yet, but it appears to require very little force--just the typical drop of a few inches--to grab solidly.
