ive noticed that only when i have my sunroof COMPLETELY open this annoying chriping noise will not quit! @ first i thought it was the styrofoam over the spare tire. so i made my girl sit in the back and drive around
ya close the roof a lil and it stops, it only happens when its wide open. any1 know what might be causing this? or a quick fix? |

My Forester is in the shop as we speak b/c of this issue. The roof motor/track was just replaced a few weeks ago (under warranty) but it squeaks worse than ever now, open or closed. If the time in the shop takes care of mine and your problem I'll post some info.
Sucks that we can't fully enjoy that big roof b/c it squeaks all the time. ![]() |

Got mine back yesterday, fixed, nice and quiet...except when I was pulling out of the dealership I heard the sound of metal object (screw?) fall out in the ceiling. I heard it roll around in there for a bit and then it stopped - I assume it got stuck somewhere when I attacked the twisties. The roof works fine. Hopefully this won't come back to haunt me.

I have the same problem with my 2008 Forester, when the roof is 3/4 open or all the way open, a horrible squeaking appears. I would like to have this fixed, and I have the "gold" warranty, so I think it would be covered? I dont like the idea of the whole assembly being opened up and loosened and such, is there any type of service that I could perform myself to alleviate this squeaking? I have read it is styrofoam up in there, which I dont think I could get to, any suggestions or just have it serviced?

As she said. I am comtemplating removing the headliner and see if I can wedge a piece of felt or something between the rubbing styrofoam pieces. I do not enjoy the f'ing moonroof just because of this issue, drives me nuts, particularly when I decline the request of the occasional woman passenger asking to open the monroof to achieve a strapless tan...and enjoy the breez..

I have the same problem on my '08 FSXT. Started happening after three months of ownership. The noice sounds like a rubbing styrofoam or Tweety bird singing.....very irritating. Took it to the dealer three times with no resolution.
1st time: Dealer claimed to have made adjust to the sunroof rail...no more further noise. Within the parking lot of the dealership, I noticed the sound. 2nd time: Went back to the dealership the a few days later to have it repaired. Took the Service Adviser for a test drive. Adviser acknowledged hearing the noise. Service Technician claims he could not reproduce the noise and no repair was done on regarding noise from the headliner. Technician claim to hearing noise from the hatch and made adjustment. Within minutes after picking up the car from the dealership the noise is back. Called the dealership same time to make another appointment. 3rd time: Drop off the car to the dealership. Offered to take the Service Adviser for a test drive again but he declined this time. I also noticed that the noise was not present on the drive to the dealership in the morning. Service Technician claims he cannot hear the noise and therefor no repair was done. Picked up the car at 3:00PM and within the dealership's parking lot the noise is back. Drove back to the dealership and took the Service Manager for a test drive. The Manager acknowledged hearing the noise and I decided to leave the car overnight for the Technician to look at the car again the following morning. Service Technician again cannot hear the noise and therefor no repair was done. I talked to the Manager and he according to him the Tech cannot do the repair unless he hears the noise even though the Manager acknowledged hearing the noise the previous day. No new work order paper work was done but the Manager signed the previous day's paper work noting that the car was checked but no problems found. He mentioned that the previous days work order was not closed or reopened but this doesn't make much sense to me since it's not reflected on the paper work. Manager was concerned I would file a Lemon Law..... Upon driving out of the dealerships parking lot the noise was back again but the Tech was already gone for the day so....... I don't know if it's SOA's policy or the dealership's policy (Patrick Subaru in Shrewsbury, MA) not to try to repair the problem if the Technician cannot reproduce the problem even though both the Service Adviser and Manager knows there's a problem but it sucks.... (I'm ranting now) In any case the noise is still present but it seems to only happen when outside temperature is above 80F. At even higher temperature I can hear the noise even with the sunroof closed. One of these days when I can find the time I'll fix it myself.

I've found this "tab" to be the cause on several sunroof squeaks. There's a locating tab that rubs the body just right to make a horrible squeak. Bending it slightly away from the body makes the noise go away. The headliner doesn't need to be removed to do it, just lowered in the rear. It's the tab on the passenger side rear near the RR "wagon glass".
