Default USB Flash Drive Limitations?

Have a '13 Forester 2.5X Premium and liked seeing it had a USB flash drive for music. Snagged an 8GB drive and loaded it up and appeared to work great. Figured out how it handled folder and file titles so re-did my drive but found I was over 8GB when all was said and done.

Soooo, snagged a 16GB drive and loaded it up with around 2,000 files in 100 different folders. Had issues from the start. Many times would read the drive and start playing the files in the last folder it was in, but then it would occasionally stop in the middle of a song and freeze. I could turn the stereo off and back on and it would re-read BUT it would start at song 1 in folder 1. Sometimes it wouldn't start again, just sit there saying it was reading the drive.

Sometimes it would just stop after playing a song, it would display the next song name, show 0:00 as the time of play but would never play. Then turn the stereo off and back on (sometimes a couple times) and then it would start back at song 1 in folder 1.

Have the original 8GB and loaded that with a mix in the root (no folders) and that fires up right away and plays solid. is there a limit on files/folders or is it maybe some funky format or something with the 16GB drive?

Thanks.

Can you see how your 16GB drive is formatted and how many files/folders you have? Thinking it might be the way I have mine formatted or configured.

Mine is :
Hewlett Packard
HP v165w
File system : FAT32

Also, do you have the nav system stereo setup or just the stock? Not sure if all of them read the drive the same.

Thanks!

Could it possibly be just that one particular 16 GB drive? Can you try another?

Could be, but it's the only 16GB I have. Got a load of 8GB ones but that's my only 16GB. I have an 8GB that seemed to work fine when loaded to about 95% full. I'll also run a scan on the 16GB or maybe format it and start over. as long as the stereo "normally" doesn't have a problem with that size I'll look closer at the drive.

thanks!

I use a 16 with no problems but have only 10 folders and maybe 24 songs per folder.
Could you have over 9999 files?

From manual:

■ USB memory format
The control items in this standard are described below.
• Maximum number of directory layers: 8 layers
• Maximum number of characters for file names: 128 byte
• Supported characters for file names: A to Z, 0 to 9, and underscore (_) (Range of alpha-numeric ISO-8859-1)
• Number of files that can be stored in a single memory device: 9999

~2,000 files in 100 folders. With 10 folders and 24 files in each, my MP3's usually run under 6MB/file, that would only be about 1-1/2GB. I have around 10GB on my drive.

Formatted drive yesterday, re-copied all files, listening this morning and first 4 songs were perfect, then locked up half way thru the 5th. Need to check naming convention, too. Thanks for the info and probably should of read up on that myself. RTFM doesn't come easy for me
