Default Temperature control not working

First I will apologize. It is way too hard to navigate this site to determine if there already exist a topic.

Anyway - My daughter has a 2004 2.5X Forester. You can search other sites for this issue - I thought that I originally saw it here. Anyway - only blowing hot air - the temperature control was not working.

Here is a link that I had saved.
Subaru Legacy International • View topic - Hot air only... No cold?

My point is, I have a fix.
Background: We got a new radio installed and then the temp control stopped working. After searching, see the above link it became apparent that the installers broke the piece of plastic that held the cable in place.

I am going to be brief if people need more information, then I will add detail.

The installers broke the tab thingy that held the cable onto the protrusions. The cable kept slipping off and thus the temp control would not work.

On other forums there were long discussions about how to hold the cable in place. Most were ideas like duct tape around the plastic knob thingy.

I finally had an epiphany, instead of trying to 'add' to the plastic I noticed that there is a internal hole. I got a number 10 coarse sheet metal screw with a big washer and screwed it into the inner diameter. This worked great. Actually, since the original tab thingy that they broke was sort of pushed into the hole - now with the screw - it pushed the tab thingy back to its original position.

Anyway, as I said, I typed this quickly. If there is interest I can be more explicit.

sounds like a good fix. maybe get a quote for the right fix and attempt to get money back from the radio installers that broke it?

In my efforts and research - apparently this is very common for the installers to break this plastic piece. Not on this site, but in my google searches many people had this same issue.
I agree, in some sense, make the installers accountable. But sometimes, it is just easier to get the job done yourself.

As an aside, on the 2004 2.5X the radio and speakers are just horrible. Usually, I don't care too much - but these were so bad I couldn't stand it.
I suppose I could start a new thread about installing speakers. I did have some troubles mostly because the windows are soooo big and they come down into the door so far you really have to be careful and neat about the wires or they could get caught on the window.

We're running the stock speakers in both our Foresters. It made a huge difference adding the door tweeters & a powered subwoofer.

I attached a Crutchfield installation PDF here at the bottom of my audio installation write up.
