Default Success: WRX seats in an 06XT (and wasn't that hard)

I'm sure most of you are aware of my attempt to put WRX seats into my 06XT. I'm sure you're also aware that the WRX seat is not a drop in option for a passenger seat due to the occupant detection plugs being different. Well, I made one last effort last night to do it and I am happy to say that it's in and fits great.

And here is the airbag indicator with me in the passenger seat

What I ended up seperating the passenger side XT top and bottom of the seat. Then i took off the foam and seat cover of the bottom, and replaced it with the foam and cover from the WRX seat. The cover was not a perfect fit, but fits well enough that there aren't any obvious spots out of order. Once the bottom was together, I bolted the top half of the WRX seat to the newly put together mixed bottom (XT metal base and WRX cusion and cover). Now comes the modifications (they're not bad so long as you can use a Dremal. The lever for the reclining mechanism is attached to the back of the seat. Since I am not using the WRX seat I am forced to use the WRX recliner lever. This lever is much shorter than that of the XT. This causes a 3-fold problem. First one I encounter was that the shorter lever partially covered the area where the seat belt bolted to the base of the seat. I needed to Dremal off a good bit of the lever in order to get enough space to reattach the seat belt mounting bolt. Second, once the bolt was in it stuck out just enought to get in the way of the lever when the passenger wants to recline. I was able to fix this by slightly bending the handle to curve around the bolt. Third, the piece that comes off of the trim and covers the seat belt bolt is going to be fit to the original lever, and I forsee a bit of trimming in my future just to mae sure the motion of the lever isn't blocked. But that's a minor thing in my opinion. I will take pictures of this tomorrow.

As it stand how the seat are in and they look fabulous. I did not weld the lateral supports to the seat base because it wasn't necessary. There is reinforcment in the foam that offer lateral support. Not up to par like when using the actual WRX base, but much much better than the stock XT seat.

So, in the end, all I would have had to do is buy the WRX seats (and in my case the leather covers). The driver seat fit in no problem, and then since I reused the XT passenger base, the sensors were already there.

Nice! I've been watching and rooting for you since you started. Looks sweet. Did you do anything to the back seat or does it match good already?

Boy, you are determined. I will give you that. Good job. Seems like it was all too much trouble to me but at least you got what you wanted.

Thanks. I haven't done anything to the back seat. The leather is a surprisingly good match in color. I could barely tell the difference between the front seat when I had only the driver's seat in.

I think I was only so determined because I had invested enough into it and if I tried to sell the seats I would have been lucky to get half of it back.

Looking at what I did last night, it really wasn't that hard. I think the problem was, is that I was going into unknown territory with a bunch of assumptions. I assumed that there would be a problem with the seats matching up. Now that I look at it all, I didn't have to buy any of that other stuff. One set of seats and a little elbow grease and some time and I got them done in a few hours. I took my stock seat out last night, worked on it a bit, woke up this morning and worked on it some more and had it done by 12:30pm.

Wow, you're awesome. What a job. The airbag light is especially impressive.

I meant to take a picture of it today, but I was swaeting so bad after the seat install that I had to call it quits. I will get one tonight or tomorrow. It is a bit lower than I wanted it, and even at the lowest setting (16/16) it still feels a hair too rough. Definitely stiffer than the pinks, which makes me wonder if they pre-loaded anything underneath. You said that the 16/16 setting was softer than stock.

The WRX seats make a big difference in hadling since I no longer have to support myself by putting a knee into the console or door to hold myself in the seat.

They could have preloaded the springs to much.

Thanks. If anything I figure it will help out others that may want to do this! Now they won't have to spend as much money as I did.

Great work!

Would 02-03 WRX seats save you troubles? When you pick WRX seats, did you ever look into the 02-03 WRX seats?

And WRX seat would give me the same trouble. I went with the 04 High-back seats because I liked the one piece look. They are less supportive than the 02/03s.
