Default Speaker Schooling?

Hey guys,

I've had a rough time getting the audio system in my car setup. I know a little about car audio thanks to a crash-course that Sea-Scooby gave me, but I am still a little lost.

My question comes from speakers. I currently have a set of Rockford Fosgate PUNCH and POWER series speakers. They are total junk. Granted, they were used hard with a stock headunit and then sat under desk and foot for almost 2 years before I got them.

Nevertheless, they sounded awful and only one speaker actually works.

So I got some Best Buy gift cards for my birthday last week and picked up a set of Pioneer speakers.

They are these:

Front:
Pioneer TS-A1672R 6-1/2"/6-3/4" 3-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com

Rear:
Pioneer TS-G1042R 4" 2-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com

Now, I DO have an amp for the speakers. It's an Alpine 4-ch and it will do 45w RMS I think.

I also have a Sea-Scooby-Sub-Kit, though I haven't actually installed the sub yet because I've been waiting to mount my amp and get a grille to cover it. It is a Kicker 8" with a Bazooka 600w amp.

My headunit is a Kenwood DNX7100

How will this package sound? Should I return the speakers, or are these going to be OK?

Kind of lame that 4" speakers are all that will fit in the back.

What do you guys think?

Well, I'm in the middle of the very same project! I have always upgraded my car audio and I have always done it on a budget and I have always had fantastic results. My two-cents is that your upgrade will work out very well for you. My system is very budget-friendly. I have already replaced my factory speakers with Jensen versions. I know, cheap, right? However, I'm 42 now and have always used Jensen and have never been let down. I'm surprised at how many Suby owners settle for 4" in the rear doors when there are several 5.25" speaks available. I put 5.25" in mine and they fit just fine. I would also recommend that you add tweeters to your front doors, if you don't already have them. I didn't have factory, so I added some surface-mount Visonic silk domes and they sound excellent! I'll be adding my JVC head unit today! Woohoo!!! So, back to your original question. Your sub is powered, that's good, your amp will easily handle the Pioneers. It will be plenty clean and loud!!! I was shocked to find that the factory speakers were only 15w. They didn't sound too bad. With just my speakers upgraded, my system off the OEM deck sounds so much better. After I get my JVC in today, it will be fantastic!! One thing I have learned about car audio, is that you don't need a 300w+ competition-level system. You don't need to spend a lot of corn on "brand" names, because many "off-brands" have the same components, are much more affordable, and sound great. I actually get a thrill out of building a budget system that sounds better then what the neighbors have and then smiling at their shocked faces when they realize that they spent, literally, four-times the money for a label.

When you install your door speakers, be sure to use some sort of foam mount. Don't be surprised if front speakers are a tad too deep. I used XTC baffles in the front and rear to help with vibration. The front doors are insanely shallow, so be sure to do all your work with all the windows DOWN. I had to cut the back off the front baffles for them to fit. However, the speakers needed the extra lift from the foam. They are the same depth as yours.

Good luck and let us know how it works out!

Do 5.25's fit in the back of an SF?

If so, then I'll return the 4" speakers and get these:

Pioneer TS-G1342R 5-1/4" 2-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com

For the fronts, I have two 1/2" spacers holding my Rockford Fosgates now. I'm sure these won't be any deeper than they were, so I should be fine.

I wish I had the money to do a FULL RAAMMAT of my car (top to bottom, every surface including the roof), but that's just a bit more than I can spend right now. I'll pick up a "speaker kit" of Dynamat when I go back to Best Buy to swap out the rear speakers.
