Project so far. Still have to reinstall and wire it. Won't work if you have X Mode.

Neat!

I have Xmode and was going to do that next to the existing lighter socket before I installed the trailer brake controller connector. An oval had to be cut in that panel to be able to tuck in the controller plug

I have a 2.4 amp dual usb in the lighter socket and maybe I can squeeze in the voltmeter next to it. I've been looking at the exact same meter. When I'm ready to commit I'll need to choose red or blue.

I considered that too. Since it's not something that needs constant monitoring in my car, I figured it would be OK for spot checks and more convenient than using a portable voltmeter. We live in a world of compromises.

Yes, you can reduce the brightness of an LED by adding... increasing the series resistor.

I'm going to guess with an LED voltmeter, adding a series resistor to dim the display will reduces the voltage displayed by the amount of voltage that's dropped across the resistor.
The other issue of dimming the display is that it could be too dim during the day?

If it was me, I'd just run the voltmeter as is & see if it's going to be a problem. If the display is too bright, you could install a switch to turn it off at night.
