Removed,soldered and all working in 15 minutes. Thanks guys. Now if only I could stop the brake pedal/steering vibrating when stopping....I'd be even happier!

I have the same problem with my brakes pulsating when slowing down. I think I'll have them throw my rear drums on a lathe and see if that helps. Glad your clock works again!

Our 2002 Forester's clock has been flakey for a year or so. Finally it completely died. I was Googling to get another, but was led here instead. Thanks for the info! 15 minutes later and the clock works like new. Isn't teh interwebs wunnerful?

My clock also died on my 2002. Can't seem to find one at the junk yard. Dealer tells me a new one will run $80. Anyone got a working use clock for sale cheap

Examination..

The first thing I noticed was that there was not a direct crack in the
solder.. it was more that the solder got stressed over time so this created
an extremely weak connection, since my clock worked for about 2
seconds here and there

You may notice that the solder on #510 is pretty pathetic..

Hopefully it didn't turn out too dark, but you can see that it looks like
cottage cheese (sortof) whereas its all pitted

The fix:

Well you have basicly two choices here

1-) Re-solder just using the solder there, basicly using a fine tip solder
"gun" (pencil tip etc) and heating it up, thus allowing the connection to be
uniform

Or (what I did)

2-) Use step one with addition use of solder material, safest way to insure
fix will last awhile

Just a little follow up

The clock works!

and when I was resoldering #510, I decided to do all the other similar
connections, seeing some other ones show'd signs of wear, better safe
than sorry..

I'll try to get the removal pics today (though, the process is fairly straight
forward)

My clock didn't work and I fixed it but it took me two tries. I had to unsolder the display and bend it out of the way so I could get to the end of resistor 510 that was under the display. It was this connection that was bad and although it involved a little more work it was quite easy to unsolder the two soldered legs of the display and then use a solder sucker to remove the solder. The legs than came out of the printed circuit board and it allowed enough room to solder resistor 510.

Isn't it weird how solder is spelled.

I just bought the car a few days ago. The only thing that wasnt 100% was the clock (it went off and on). Now it works perfectly!! So glad I got a subaru. Such a joy to drive. Thx for the tip senorsubie !!

My clock in my '02 Forester hadn't worked for a year and a half. Thanks to Google, I found this forum post. 5 minutes with a soldering iron and the clock was back in business.

I can't believe it, I just tried the magic soldering trick you so nicely described, and shock!! My clock works!!! The soldering didn't look bad on it, so I didn't think it was the problem, but I figured I had nothing to lose,
