Thanks SenorSubie for the detailed post with pics. Unfortunately for my clock the problem is the display. It has the burn spot, I've tested the board after re-soldering and that's it.

Does anybody have a clock or display they would sell me. If not any help finding one would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Most of them have the burn spot on the display, but still work fine after the re-soldering. Did you solder both ends of the 510 resistor/diode/thingy? Check the other solder connections too.

If yours still turns out to be toast, I sell fixed clock assemblies like this one on ebay regularly: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...0701756&rd=1,1

Default It Worked!

Dear SeniorSubie: It worked on this 2002 Forester XT! That was a big savings, and now I own a soldering iron! Thanks again! You are the top banana!

I only soldered one end of the 510 resistor. When metering it reads correctly so that doesn't appear to be the issue. I'm pretty sure the display is fried. I'll try re-soldering the 510 though.

So before pulling the clock back out it randomly starting working on Saturday night. The next time I started the car it no longer worked. I pulled the clock out today and looked at the back of the board. It was the connections for the four pins that needed to be re-soldered.

Clock works fine now! Thanks again for the help!

Default Clock doesnt work

A minor problem but annoying none the less! Anybody know of common faults or quick fixes? I dont really want to spend what will probably be too much money getting a small problem like this fixed! There is no display atall on the clock. It's a 98 GLS.

welcome to the forums rob. You will find this is a common problem.
It's a good idea to lurk around and look at all the FAQ's, and other informational 'stickies' and such. Lots of great info there..

Just thought i'd take on the task of fixing my overhead console clock
yesterday.. after living without it for about six months I thought I might
like to reunite with the clock..

Here we go!

Removal of clock:

Pictures to come soon

Lets get this clocked fixed...

Examination..

The first thing I noticed was that there was not a direct crack in the
solder.. it was more that the solder got stressed over time so this created
an extremely weak connection, since my clock worked for about 2
seconds here and there

Heres the "to the eye" picture

[

You may notice that the solder on #510 is pretty pathetic..

Upclose:

Hopefully it didn't turn out too dark, but you can see that it looks like
cottage cheese (sortof) whereas its all pitted

The fix:

Well you have basicly two choices here

1-) Re-solder just using the solder there, basicly using a fine tip solder
"gun" (pencil tip etc) and heating it up, thus allowing the connection to be
uniform

Or (what I did)

2-) Use step one with addition use of solder material, safest way to insure
fix will last awhile

Pictures

Soldering is done.. here are the results..

This picture allows you to see the improvement to the connection

Just a little follow up

The clock works!

and when I was resoldering #510, I decided to do all the other similar
connections, seeing some other ones show'd signs of wear, better safe
than sorry..

There ya have it!

I'll try to get the removal pics today (though, the process is fairly straight
forward)
Just bought a 2000 Forester and clock didn't work!!
Followed your instructions and now everything is perfect.
Thanks Senior Subie

Just thought i'd mention that the solder on both no.510 and no.300 were faulty.

Default Same issue here, but fixed

The exact same thing was happening with my clock. My buddy found the bad solder joint and repaired it. Beats buying a new one.

Default Subaru clock

Thank god somebody has found a way of repairing the clock, can't wait to fix my clock tomorrow once I've replaced the radiator. Got a split header tank on the rad.
My subby is 1999 Turbo S manual All weather pack. Ordered the radiator from Aaron Radiators in London for a manual subby. Took the old one out ready to put the new one in and find that my rad has a gear box cooling tank which I later found out that these are only on Automatic subbys. Can anybody think why a manual has a gearbox cooling tank.

Thanks for the clock tip. Really useful.

Thanks SenorSubie. Clock was out when I bought my 99 Forester S. Following your writeup, I soldered the 510 and the 300 and it worked perfectly. The pictures and detailed explanation was great. Never soldered anything in my life before and was able to get this accomplished quickly and easily. And to think that the stealership wanted to charge me $74 for a new clock.
