well the guy who did the soldering for me (i couldnt find anything small enough) said it was a diode. He owns an electronics repairs shop - TVs, high end home and car audio etc, so i beleive him ;) im just stoked it was such an easy (and free) fix!

Makes sense, thats the funnyest looking "resistor" I ever saw... diode makes more sense. WHICHEVER, I fixed my r510 a week ago and the clock is still fine! Amazing..... 15 minutes of work and you save 60 dollars on a new clock. Thanks!!!!!!

WOW! I hope this works when I go to look at my clock?

You guys mentioned the clock working intermitently. Mine just stopped working a day after I installed some aftermarket speakers, subwoofers, and amp.

Would it be a different problem? Or the same? Well, I'm still gonna see if this fix will work. :)

Sounds like a coincidence. Installing extra stuff shoudln't affect the clock or anything else if the new stuff was installed right and fused separately. Try the clock fix mentioned here.... I did it a few weeks ago and my clock is still working fine. :)

Anyone who has fixed theirs notice anything odd?

It might be mental, but my clock is REALLY dim with the headlights on. I usually keep my headlights on all of the time, but I noticed that when I am wearing my sunglasses, I can barely see the clock, so I turn off the headlights.

My clock dims automatically when the headlights are on. Always done that - maybe you're just now taking special notice?

Hey - is there a similar fix if my ignition coil goes out? just kidding. *sigh*
(dammit - not even 80,000 miles on this thing and it's falling apart...)

Yea mine too. The clock dims cause you don't need all that brightness at night. The stereo system auto-dims too on my 99 forester/.

I just performed this fix yesterday on my '98 !!!

On first inspection, it appeared as if R150 was there properly, so I probed it with a pencil to verify the solder joints and it came off flying.

I added some solder to the part before re-soldering onto the board and voila'! The clock is now working properly -- thanks for the info!

BTW, there was the previously mentioned overheated spot on the clock display.

Well I haven't done the soldering yet. But there seems to be a heated spot on mine too. I never noticed it before Mine is on the bottom left side of the clock dispaly.

Yup. Maybe it comes from the heated diodes like 150 that get hot and the solder breaks? d150 is at the lower left under the clock, right where you were talking about.
