well, I was working with that clock and I thought that the black spot on the left bottom of the screen says that clock is bad....
I did general inspection of the circuit board before coming to this forum and it looked everything was fine...nice and tight and in the place...I even called a junk yard today...my good luck that it was closed at 5 PM

then I read this forum...had the clock right on my computer desk and saw the diode 510 closely...tried to move it with my fingernail ....voila....it was lose....so I went back to the car...put the clock back in ...pushed diode 510 by hand and it lit up....wow

I will get a pen solderer now...and will fix this da#n $82 problem in no time....

bad bad subaru...pls make clocks little better...

Cheers heaps for posting this, although I'm not a forester owner the same clock is in my 2002 wrx club spec evo 5 hatch (just bought last week) and your 510 resistor solder job worked a treat. Tidy work on finding the dry solder joint I had a quick look before I started searching for a replacement clock online and couldn't spot any issues, then spotted your post and once you look its dead obvious (mine was dry closest to the display). Can't thank you enough for posting...made my day

yesterday I decided to buy a new clok for my old forester, but before I said to myself why don't you have a look on the forester forum !! and it was really a good idea (autocongratulation) as I found your post, and thank to it I'd repair my clock !!! my wife's very happy to discover it working for the first time 'til we'd bought this car ! thanks again

This posting saved me $95 (parts only). My dealer said the clock was broken and a replacement clock would cost me $95. I read your posting, borrowed a soldering iron, and fixed it tonight. I had to go for a drive right way -- just to admire the clock again. I love that clock. Thank you so much for your GREAT help! (2002 Forester)

When the clock went dark on our '98, fixing it never crossed my mind - and I fix everything myself. My wife just dealt with it for the last 5+ years (!). The few junk yards I looked at didn't have working ones, so I really just gave up. Thanks for making me look at it! Resistor 510 was just hanging on, and 300 was completely off. 20 minutes of easy work, and it's back working.

Same here. I just stumbled on this thread, went out to the garage and fixed my clock in like 5 minutes. I think it might actually have taken longer for the soldering iron to heat up than it did to pull the clock, solder the 2 diodes, and reinstall.

Thanks for the info! I took the clock out and 510 was barely hanging on, so I had hubby solder it for me and it has been working just fine. Saved me $85!

what do you do when you solder both and the clock still does not work? other than spend 80 bucks?

Why can't Subaru make a decent clock?
My first Subaru was a used '92 Loyale, and its clock always lost power and reset itself, and it turned out to be a common problem with a self-desoldering component.
When I test drove the 01 Forester L that I just bought, I noticed that the clock was dead and figured that would find a thread on the same problem here.
Oh well. I guess if Subaru's going to screw something up in an otherwise great car, I'm glad it's just the clock. I'll have to pull mine out and fix it tomorrow.
