Default My Head-up display (HUD) install

I thought I would use this area to document my intended HUD install.

Here is what i'm working with; it's an OEM HUD from a 2000-2004 Pontiac Grand Prix:

I was able to determine what all the wires are meant to connect to and tested out the VSS connection as seen in the video below. I haven't been able to test it much to determine the accuracy but it seems close. Here's a short vid (remember that the display is upsidedown and backwards; I was going 25mph and up to 34mph).

YouTube - hud1

I also have a second dash piece that I will use to test fitment and figure out a way to mount it.

As it stand, I am just awaiting the purchase of the segment of the wire harness where the gauge cluster comes in. That way I can make an extension and not have to tap into the stock harness (I HATE modifying the stock wire harness!!!). Let me know if you have the harness bits I need.

I do too. Well, I know it can work but the HUD unit is very large and i'm afraid that as is it won't fit behind the cluster.

I'm also scared to death to cut into the dash where this will need to go.

No, it's a bunch of stuff. See the pic below. It will also show the radio station (I cut that part out) but that won't work with my setup (or any subaru radio for that matter). The "Check Gages" comes up when the CEL or Voltage light comes on.

Ah nice. I'm waiting for the car manufacturers to take the laser options and make them more widely available.. doesn't seem they want to though since these things have technically been available since the 90s and only luxury vehicles have them. Someone needs to talk some sense into Subaru about this being a safety feature (eyes on the road).

Todd,

1) I'll reply to your PM soon.

2) Had you considered trying to source the HUD from a C6 Corvette? They have a tach and a bunch of other info as well. Should work just fine with the Forester.

3) If you are concerned about space, disassemble the HUD module. Simply open the case, and start moving things around. You could probably make your own, much smaller, fiberglass shell, or figure out a way to stuff it all into a Radio Shack project box.

Hey Phil. Yes, I considered the Vette version. That was actually the one that I first started to look at and what got me interested in the HUD in the first place. It really came down to money, which I have very little of. The Vette ones, as you can see in your link are going to a couple hundred bucks. That was just too much to spend on an experiment (however, I bet you if I got that I'd be more determined to put one in). Seeing as I know the guy that manages a large junkyard in Jessup, Md I started rooting around and was able to aquire 4 or 5 HUDs (including switch and wiring) for, IIRC, $5; can't beat that.

You I was able to get the triggers figured out and with the wiring harness extension I want to make I can tap it into the car and see if everything activates as it should.

Once that's done it's a matter of fitting it. I have already looked into disassembling the HUD and rearranging things. There are a couple of issues with doing that. The main one is that there are two mirrors in the unit that flip the display so that when it's projected onto the windshield it's legible. Another issue with the mirror is that it's adjustable. There is a switch and motor that will move the mirror up and down thus moving the projected image up or down on the windshield. Now, this isn't really a necessity and I could just remove it however the same mirror also acts as a magnifier. If I remove it i'm afraid that the image will be too small to see. However, there's only one way to find out and I plan to see what it looks like this weekend. The LCD panel is only about the size of a stick of gum and that would be super easy to attach to the dash.

Here's someone else's video taking the HUD apart. You can see the different pieces involved.

Hmm, it seems the people I used to get connectors from no longer exist.

You might be better off finding a used gauge cluster for a Forester, and then taking that to the Junkyard to scavange old Subarus for connectors.

I'll keep looking though!

Is it me? Or is gauges spelled wrong?

For some reason that's how it's spelled on most American cars
