Hi folks

I’ve been following this thread with great interest, as I dislike the chimes and my wife absolutely hates them. I bought an ’01 Forester in February and have been trying to find that elusive ‘peace and quiet’ ever since.

The plug-under-the-seat sounded good, but being the compulsive person that I am, I wanted it ALL. I was out to get every one of those chimes… the ‘yer-seatbelt’s-not-fastened-dummy’ one, the 'are-your-keys-STILL-in-the-ignition?’ one, the ‘were-you-born-in-a-barn?-your-door’s-open’ one, the ‘on-the-hour’ one (no, wait… that one’s in the hall… sorry!).

Since I’ve been doing this for a while (ever since cars have had beepers and chimes…), I was pretty sure that I could find the little noise-maker itself. I finally hunted down the culprit yesterday. Under the lip of the dash, just to the left (toward the driver’s door) of the steering column, is a rectangular white box with “010” and a date stamp on it. It’s about 3.5 x 2.5 inches and is a little less than an inch thick. (That’s about 90mm x 70mm x 20mm to you metric types…) It has an 8-pin rectangular plug with 6 leads. I popped out the plug and hit the key. The ‘air bag’ light came on and went off, as did the other expected warning lights, but there were NO chimes, just sweet silence!

So, for now, it’s ‘Mission Accomplished’, but I’ll keep you posted if I discover any ill effects!

I do not believe this is going to be a problem for driver's side. The passenger side does have position detection on the rail. Plus if this is related to SRS system by law this wiring should be marked with Yellow tag just like the rest of SRS system wiring.

Thanks for the tips mine is done within 2 minutes. Very easy to do.

So as soon as I read this I headed to the garage, a little tricky to get both hands under the seat but im a small guy and flipped upside down and immediately silenced that nonsense alarm. Thanks again, well worth it

If you pull down the rubber on the seatbelt you'll notice two sets of wires going to the seatbelt. They both travel in the same housing from the seatbelt to under the seat where it splits in two. One goes to a yellow clip (which I think has something to do with airbag/seatbelt tensioner ???). The othe is a white clip with yellow ends and that simply controls the seatbelt light and and chime. It's as easy as unclipping a clip and NO MORE DING< DING< DING!!!! Enjoy......

Here is the split of the wire housing into two under the seat.

Here is the yellow connector for saftey devices. And the sinister connector in the background.

Here she is!!!!! Disconnect it and enjoy peace and quiet!!
scoob02,

will this work for the 09 forester? thanks

Simply open up your door, and look for the black rubber coated pressure switch near the door latch on the body of the car. One screw... take it off. Disconnect the wire (or wires, doesn't matter really) and no more ding!

Of course it will also affect your door ajar indicator for the driver door, but I always know when it hasn't closed all of the way so it isn't a problem for me. If it turns out to be a problem, just reconnect it!

is there an easy way to remove the pressure switch without taking off all the surrounds on the inside of the car?
cheers,
AJ

ok, i admit i didn't read all 5 pages of this so it may have been covered.. sorry.

but why on earth would you mess with cables that could potentially cause the airbag system problems when you can simply do the "20 clicks method?"

I can confirm 100% that it works in both the 2008 and 2009 models. just take your time and do it right.

Can someone please post how to do the 20-click method and what exactly it does? And why that result is different from unplugging the thing?

Has anyone confirmed that this works on 09 Foresters?

20 click method:
1.Turn the key to On position, do not start it. (2 clicks forward)

2. Wait till the first set of chimes starts.

3 .Quickly take your drivers side seatbelt buckle and insert and remove into latch exactly 20 times within 30 seconds. Don't rush it, just make sure to fully insert the tab all the way into the latch each time. You should end with the seatbelt unbuckled.

4. After 20 times, turn key to off, and remove key, then try turning back on and starting vehicle. Hopefully this will work for you now.

Sometimes you don't get it on the first few tries.. i am not sure why. Maybe timing? But it will work.

The result is different in that it doesn't do anything dangerous like undermine the airbag system. it simply disables the chime.

Using this method, you should hang on to the directions. If you have to unplug your battery, you will have to re-do it as the seatbelt chime will be re-enabled.

worked first try on my 09

I pulled off the 20 click trick on my Wife's '08 Outback, took a few whacks at it but it did work. I was willing to go nuclear and follow this thread if the beeping continued.

The difference vs. the method described in this thread is that the 20-click method is only semi-permanent, from what I've read. If you unplug your battery for any reason, the chime will reset itself and you'll have go through the procedure again.

Ok, so I tried this. NG. I need to ask...As stated above, "Wait till the first set of chimes starts". Are we talking about the chimes that come on as soon as you turn the key to the 2nd position or wait until the seat belt chimes. I tried the wait until the seat belt chimes start but they never did. The light flashes and stay on and flashes. I waited several minites but it never chimed. My wife actually came in the garage and said what are you doing...as I was sitting in the FOZ. I said I am trying to disable the seat belt chime.......she gave me that "stupid car guy look" and walked out. It was quite funny when I thought about it, I got a good laugh but my seat belt chime is still there. Can someone please clarify? Thanks!

I just did the "clickty click" of the seatbelt on my 07 XT. It worked!

I had to do it a about 3 times and the third time I clicked it 40 times within a minute and it worked! But be advised, after starting it back up it will do the initial 4 chimes for the belt but thats it! It does not chime or blink you after the first set of chimes. I am not sure if the other people who did the click method still get the first 4 chimes or not. Maybe they could "chime" in.
