The instructions are in your manual. It is a simple proceedure, but it is a pain to get the timing right and get your car in program mode.

Sorry to bring a old thread out of the grave, but I have a 02 WRX with the factory security system, and I can't seem to be able to reprogram the remote.

I had followed the instructions in the factory owners manual, and I have also tried the instructions on cars101.com. I can't even get the car to honk at me the first time.

Any suggestions?

I was having a similar problem with my 98. I ended up giving up and going to the dealer where they informed me the fuse at the back of the module was missing. That's all it needed. They programmed the fobs and that's it.

So...check all the fuses and try to program.

Are you saying there is a fuse on the module that is behind the glove box? If so, I will give it a check. I need to check my cabin air filter anyhow.

I've programmed several remotes adn it still takes me numerous tries to get my car into program mode. Keep trying, it should work.

I've tried my FXT probably 5 times and my WRX 15 times. I have never been able to get it into programming mode.

When you turn the key ten times, you are supposed to come to rest with the key in the off position, right? I have tried it both ways numerous times.

I found you have to turn it extremely quick. Almost to the point of not even pausing at all.

In my 98, if you remove the lower panel under the steering wheel, there is a black cord/wire set coming from the module. In behind there is an additional fuse. Worth checking to see if your forester's module is similar.

I had a hard time with this too. From the cars101 site:

Quote:
Sit in driver's seat and unlock all doors. Open and close the driver's door
Turn the ignition key from LOCK to ON position 10 times within 15 seconds. Be sure to stop at both lock and on. The horn will HONK once to indicate transmitter programming mode is activated. Leave key in LOCK position and don't remove it from ignition...

After turning the key from "lock" to "on" 10 times, I never heard the horn honk. Not sure what that was all about. I tried over and over waiting to hear something until I decided to keep going with the programming and open & close the door. Bingo. I heard a steady tone and then I started toggling the lock/unlock switch as instructed.

Maybe I helped, maybe not... good luck!

I have throughly read the instructions, both in the manual and on cars101.com. Could you please post the exact procedure you went through? (including the details of where you stoped with the key (in the lock or on position) and what lock and unlock switch you were toggling (on the key fob I assume, but I really don't want to make any assumptions)

That would be really helpful.

Thanks...
