Default Jazzy’s Aux-in / iPod

I’ve had Jazzy Engineering’s Aux-in Pro iPod kit installed for a week and could not be happier, it works great. It adds an auxiliary input to the stock head unit. This kit fits all P130 head units as well as many others, see his website for details. The kit comes with an iPod audio/charge adapter, it charges your iPod as well as plays iTunes. Also it can be set up with a 1/8" stereo jack input (a standard headphone jack) that most other MP3 players use. I’m using the 1/8 jack to connect my Shuffle. Everything I needed for my setup was included in the kit except for two RCA F / F adapters and an RCA to 1/8" stereo jack.

I won’t go into head unit removal since it is pretty well covered here.

Installation of the kit is easy. I followed the directions for the 2005/2006 Subaru WRX from Jazzy’s site,

http://www.jazzyengineering.com/Inst...Manual_2-0.pdf

Here are a few pictures of my install.

This is the CD player section of our head unit with the Aux-in board on top. I double sided taped the aux-in board to the cd player close to that position shown.

This shows the head unit just prior to final reassembly.

Another shot prior to assembly this one shows the the Aux-in board in place

I wrapped the cable with electric tape to rig up a strain relief so the cable doesn’t accidentally get pulled out.

To get the cable out the back of the head unit I cut a little piece off the heat sink.

There are two contact points between the heat sink and the head unit. I added a little thermal compound to both of those. This is the same stuff you use when installing a computer CPU cooler. This isn’t necessary but I felt it couldn’t hurt.

Back of the assemble head unit.

Full front view of the complete kit prior to installation.

This shot shows iPod connectors prior to installation in the center console. You obviously don’t want to have two devices hooked up at the same time but it is nice to be able to use either input.

I borrowed my daughters iPod for the final shot. Funny how she wound up with the best iPod in the family.

Special thanks to Peaty for sending his head unit to Jazzy so he could confirm that his kit would work. You can see Peaty’s head unit in various pictures. Thanks to Jazzy too, this kit is great.

Looks excellent SuperRu. Thanks for the detailed writeup - where/how did you end up wiring the power leads for the iPod cable?

Thank you, this thing rocks.

I tapped into the 12v accessory/cigarette lighter for power. It is the yellow/black wire.

Yeah, I figured that out after skimming scoobymods again.

Does redline sell the armrest extension piece as well, or was that just a one time custom piece for Richard?

Maciek will be more than glad to make you one. Just send him an email. He is a great guy to work with. I sent him an armrest to make a template for this armrest cover.

The new Foresters have an AUX in for MP3 players.

The thing is, they are behind a little door that shares a space with the cig. lighter so if you are using the AUX in or the cig. lighter for a radar detector the door has to stay open and it looks like crap.

I am thinking about splicing into the line in behind the center unit.

I put a switch in there, with one position semi-hardwired to our XM, another wired to the standard socket remains for general use (usually the sta-nav) and one between them for future expansion (currently it is a rather useless off position).

It was a right swine getting a switch into the box behind there. The soldering iron scars have healed now! You need to be aware that the 3.5mm socket has a switch in it. If you don't bypass or substitute this switch, then you will have to have something plugged into it to make a spliced-in connection work.

I tapped in there as well and get a horrible squeal. I hooked mine up via the RCA cable connectors so I don't run the ground loop box. I guess I'll have to swap over to the other connector so I can run one.

Default Power to iPod

Can you tell me about the cord you have for the iPod? I see the red and black wires. Does it actually charge the iPod? If so, I need one of those. Was it part of the Jazzy kit, or where can I get one?

It won't charge my 2nd generation iPod Touch , so I doubt it'll charge an iPhone 3G either. (damn you Apple with your policy of continuous product 'improvement'!)
