Default ipod compatibility

I have a 2012 Forester Premium. I think I have compatibility issues with my ipod mini. Forester's owner's manual does not list the mini as compatible and plugging the mini into the car's USB port doesn't work (message=no device). The manual also cautions against trying to use non-compatible ipod models and hints at fire danger. However, I can plug in the mini using the earphone jack on the mini and the similar jack in the car. There is no display on the radio screen, but the sound goes through the car's speakers. Question: am I potentially doing any damage to car or mini by doing this?

Using the standard audio jack is completely fine and no damage can be done to anything. It is the same as plugging headphones into the ipod.

Default That 1/8th

Jack is how we use our Ipad.

Kinda stupid that the connector doesn't "just work"...but hey.

Contact Apple, it is a Subaru problem.

When not using the Ipad, I use my Blackberry for Slacker Radio and Nobex.

Yeah on my 2009 Impreza, my 2006 iPod works with the ipod cable, so I can access it from the radio to choose my music. but my iPhone 3G doesn't work (get the message on the screen of the iPhone when I hook it up).

Thought I heard that there was a firmware upgrade the dealer could do to make newer Apple ipod and iPhone devices compatible?

Otherwise, if my old iPod dies, I may consider upgrading to a newer radio that would support a new ipod.

Apple changed the pin-outs on the ipod jacks (and the iphone) when they went from firewire compatible charging to usb only charging.

I had the same issue on my wife's car (Volvo, but the concept and issue is the same). You can buy a feed-through connector that corrects the problem. I got a Scosche Passport. It does the trick. Charging Adapter for iPod & iPhone

Default That Scoche thing...

Is pointless. Why spend $25 to turn the cable into a "charging port"? Save the $25 and get a multiple USB 12V adapter that will charge Blackberry, Apple and Android phones(usually even less than the $25).

Then once you have multiple USB in the car, you can connect a micro, mini or apple charger to that.

Actually you can play music through it as well and get back all the ipod functionality through the car's stereo. Not just charging. I should have been more specific.
