Nice stealth install. But man it looks like you could use some new subs.

Ok so we've got two opposing firing 10" kickers now, correct.
Excellent work!
The $50 question..... How's it sound??????

The speakers installed were some old school Kicker C8s, which are a 8" sub designed for small sealed boxes. Circa 1995ish. The trim on the speakers were not in the greatest shape, but the surrounds, cones and voice coils were still in excellent working order. The old school Kicker, Rockford, Soundstream and JL Audio subs are nearly bulletproof. You really have to abuse then to destroy them.

After the install I listened to tracks off my mp3 player to get a feel for how they sound. I mainly listen to rock music with a lot of drums and I loved they way they sound.

Some of the TOOL tracks that I like to test systems out with have quick, fast drum sections that tend to get blurred/muddied together into one big note by most subs. With this install each seperate inpact could be heard (and felt) and each strike was very distinct and tight. The real low lows were a little weak, but this only became appearant on tracks I knew really well, and with notes even larger subs have problems with. This was more of an issue with the limits of an 8" sub, and not a problem due to the install.

I can vouch for that.. I was 3rd owner of a JL 10w6 for about 15 years that bumped away in three different cars.. I managed to make it give up the ghost though.. dang old poorly recorded stuff from the 80's.. popped it. Oh well.. got the money's worth. :)

Sure.. You might get a little more low-freq extension depending on if you're doing any eq'ing at all... Might pull back on the output a little but I'd subtract from the blaring frequencies then readjust levels rather than add any boost at the low frequencies.. to flatten out the low-end extension a bit.

Cool though.. I had an idea those opposing subs would be pretty tight and generate some serious bass for a couple 8's.

Fish has a fairly simple setup, so freq. adjustments are limited to messing with X-over points and the limited adjustments allowed by the headunit.

We could have used a bit more of the airspace above and infront of the fender to extend the low freq. response, but the trade off for loss of output wasn't worth it. A lot of the real low stuff tends to get drowned out by road noise anyway.

With that being said, I think it still sounds really good. I personally would be very happy with the same setup in my car.

I went ahead and ordered the 1-din pocket as I thought I had the stock radio sold but ran into a snag as I couldn't get the wiring out for the aux input to install it in a non-aux earlier year forester (another topic) but.. When it ever hits the shelves, I'm probably going with a CDA-9887 alpine that's supposed to be the bomb with the auto-tuning audassey / Imprint technology so tuning willl be pretty cool for stuff like that.. Although, something like the MS-8 or PXE-H650 processors that use the OEM head unit are also a possibility that would give some serious tuning capability.. kind of like the 3sixty.2 with OEM signal summing and de-eq'ing, but with addition of auto-tuning.

That sounds like it will be a pretty flexible setup when you get it all done.

Back when I was hardcore into car audio always ran an Audio control EQX. I'd spend hours tuning my car just right.

Yeah I hope so.. just can't decide on either the CDA head unit, or the MS-8 into the stock OEM.

I need to get crackin' on learning how to build up that wheel well enclosure though.. I've got the mdf, I just need a workbench built and fiberglass materials.. oh, and time. :)

Time is an important one. If I had more time I'd have a prefab kit made so others could do the 8" sub mod with minimal skills required.

I've got one of those in my garage... just need to find out if it still works.

I can concur with that... I currently use JL Audio 8IB4 woofers in my front doors as midbass drivers (50Hz @ 12 dB - 120Hz @ 12 dB). And I still love the sound of the round Kicker solobaric subs.

If your not getting the low end your looking for you might want to brace your enclosure better. I didn't really see how the enclosure was put together so I'm just guessing.

Appears they used foam for sides and top then mdf on the bottom then the main structural rigidity is in the raamatt or dynamat (not sure what you're using there). Makes me think I wonder if a guy could glass in the enclosure to make it more rigid with fiberglass and resin?

The enclosure mainly uses the body panels of the car. Glassing the area would make it stronger, but there a lot of cables, wires and the fuel filler (passenger side) that you may want access to in the future. RAAMmat can be peeled off fairly easy to allow you access to these things if needed.

As far as low end, I'm talking about the sub 30hz range that is a little lacking, but then most songs don't contain info that low. To get decent SPLs out of those frequencies you need cone area and lots of excursion. It is tough to do with an 8".

I wish more people had the opportunity to listen to the sound of the dual 8" subs. You would probably be suprised. The output is very impressive for a small amount of power and relatively small subs. Most people who do not know about the install would be looking in the back for a 10" or 12" sub in a rather large box taking up a good portion of the cargo floor. I don't think you can beat the combo of good clean bass, stealth, and full access to you cargo area.
