Cellphone holder(suction cup) damaged dashboard

Recently bought a brand new forester xt and placed iottie cellphone holder on the dashboard(rubbery soft touch material, vinyl) for 2 days and i got a doughnut shape indentation and dark shiny stain.

So far I have tried multi purpose stain cleaner,Ice interior cleaner and protectant, lots of wet tissues, car compound(tiny amount), and magic eraser. And none of them really worked...

Looks like the indentation is not too bad but the dark shiny stain is still there and really noticeable. Strong glue from the suction cup got soaked into the dashboard I think.

Some people tried WD40, olive oil, hair dryer or heat gun.

One of the most popular car detail shop in my area doesn't repair this kind of damage.

Has anybody have any success to restore this kind of damage (stain)?

Or is there any dashboard accessories that I can just cover up the damaged area and forget about it?

Attached picture is not mine but looks almost identical.

I see this is your first forum post, so welcome to the forum from Oregon!

The Garmin GPS suction mount uses a disk that is mounted (double sided tape) to the dash. We have this installed in all our vehicles.

Here's a link to one on Amazon: Garmin StreetPilot C Series Large Dashboard Disk 2 Pack Many manufactures make these disks in various sizes, this is just one example.

As an option... assuming you're still going to use the ottie cellphone holder on the dash, perhaps the Garmin disk, or something like, this will cover that damaged area?

Thanks for the reply. I moved the iottie cellphone holder to the area with hard plastic. Maybe i will buy one of those disks to cover the damage and attach my family picture or something on top

I hesitate to suggest this, but what about some Goo Gone product? I see there's one for automobiles, although I haven't used that particular version of the product:

Goo Gone for Cars - Automotive Spray Gel | Goo Gone

Maybe it will lift/dissolve the shiny part... I'd test it in some hidden spot, first, if you're going to try it. I don't know how safe it would be for the dash material.

Just a thought...

Yikes. When I moved my suction cup phone holder from my old Forester to the new, I forgot to clean the suction cup and it would not stick to my new dash. Now I am glad I have been too lazy to mount it!

On the occasions I use Waze I just set the phone up in the info area, but that won't work long term.

The 2016 interior is much more prone to showing wear than my 2004, that is for sure.

That sucks seeing something like that happen to a brand new car. Not sure what will get it off.

It's like seeing the first scratch or dent in your car. Every time you clean it you go back to that spot and see it every time.

It sucks.. every time I see the passenger side side mirror I see the damage(I try not too) and it drives me nuts... also I already tried all kind of chemicals and dont have many options left. Only two options are 1.goo gone that Mike mentioned and 2. heat gun. But goo gone will most likely make the dash look dull and heat gun can damage the dash more too.

Sucks. Now Im just looking for something to cover up the damage instead of repairing it.

Sometimes it best to let it be for awhile, as doing too much could make it worse!

What about one of those custom fitted dash top mats/covers?

Everybody whined they wanted soft touch materials. Subi gave people a soft touch dash.

Try one of the cd slot mounting solutions. I like mine. Not sure why cars still come with optical media. That stuff is ancient. Can hardly buy computers or other systems with.
