After 30 years in transportation, my first suggestion if you decide to rent and drive, is to pre-trip the vehicle BEFORE you accept it. When we moved our folks, I spent 30 minutes pre-tripping the truck. The guy at Penske said he had never had anyone as meticulous as I was. I explained the last thing I wanted was to wait for hours on the side of the road for a service call. Also, if you don't note the damage on the front end, you can be certain they will find in when you turn it in....and guess who pays. So take the time up front, it's well worth the effort.

PODS is great! You make all the various arrangements with their central office, and they make everything happen with their local franchisee(s). You get an e-mail the night before a pickup or delivery, and a phone call from the driver when he's on the way. You can change arrangements right up to then if your situation changes. Automatic billing to credit card. You're only billed as various steps in the process happen, e.g., they will keep the POD in their local (indoor) facility after they pick it up till you tell them to move it, and only then do you pay for the move. Basically, you can mix and match just about everything: local delivery, local storage, another local delivery, long haul, delivery at the far end, pickup at the far end. It's a combo of storage and moving, organized just the way you want it to be, and you only pay for what you need and only when you need it.

IIRC, rent was about $200/mo with the first month free. Haul from MD to NH (~500 mi) was about $1500 for my second POD, after gas prices had gone up. The first one was a bit cheaper.

There's no moving day trauma with PODS! The only downer is that it's easy to slack off since you're the only one in charge of the schedule.

+1 on Penske. I use U-haul for local moves, do all the work myself because we don'w own a whole lot of things.

A co-worker hired a moving company to move five miles away. He received a "best estimate" when the moving co employees looked at this boxes, then charged him +$800 when they arrived at the new location, citing disassembly costs - he only had a bed frame disassembled. When he disputed the higher cost, they refused to unload the furniture from the truck.

My friend ended up calling "the man" and was advised to pay the money and then take them to court, both of which he did. The jury is still out, but the clerk at the court house mentioned that this is not the first time this particular moving co had been taken to court.

My personal plan if I move again, and now with my two baby girls, is to rent a U-haul and pick up some day laborers for the loading/unloading. I don't know how that will work out but other than that, it will probably be Pods.

A good source for day laborers is craigslist. I've made money more than once doing random odd jobs like yardwork, snow removal or helping people move.

I bet you could find someone here to drive the Uhaul for you for a decent price.

That's the way it should be, as long as we keep getting good info that adds to the knowledge base. It sure beats a whole bunch of shorter threads that simply regurgitate the same stuff and clog the search function.

My bro in law just moved to BC. about a week ago.
He got a 17fter from Uhaul.

We packed it real well.. and he is towing a SUV behind the truck.
Luckly, his dad is a trucker so he is driving the truck, and my bro in law is driving his fit.
